We stayed in Shifnal, and visited Shrewsbury, Ironbridge and Ludlow. Everyone we spoke to, from parking attendants, bar staff, and cafe workers were so friendly and helpful. They were so proud of where they lived and wanted to share the very best with us. Such lovely people, such beautiful countryside. A really great break away.

Us residents of Vancouver Island in Bristish Columbia, Canada, like to say we live in the Best Place on Earth. We are wrong. The Best Place on Earth is the Shropshire Hills. The natural hills and valleys surrounding Clun are simply breathtaking. Outdoor activities are plentiful, good food is readily available and there is a rich and fascinating history dating back 3000 years to explore. I'm selling up and moving there.

The Shropshire Hills AONB [often called Little Switzerland] which has just been listed as one of the finest destinations in the world is a splendidly compact part of the county with Iron Age forts, delightful walks, babbling brooks, stunning scenery and views, nice country pubs, micro breweries and barrow loads of history, political, geological and literary. Much Wenlock, home of the modern Olympics and Mary Webb; Ludlow, built on the Roman road and with its castle linked to Richard III, is one of England's top five hill towns; the Long Mynd, Caer Caradoc fort, Carding Mill Valley, and so much more.
Too many people simply pass through Shropshire on their way to Wales or the Northwest and in so doing miss England's least populated county, its largest inland county and one of its most dazzling jewels.
Take time to visit this county that television producers don't know where it is on a map, and have a memorable time. Access by car, train or bus.
Oh yes, the farms of Shropshire produce some of the best ice cream in the land too: mmm yummy.

The Long Mynd is just brilliant, so open you can walk for miles without seeing anyone, if you use the less trodden paths. However if you want to meet people and have a chat then the promoted routes are for you. At the base of the Long Mynd you have 3 pubs for lunch in Church Streeton, 2 in Little Stretton and one in All Stretton. On the other side you have Bridges, The inn on the Green and the Crown at Wentnor. All great pubs serving brill lunchtime menus.

This was the 2nd time we have walked in this area this year. We visited Knighton in February and went for a walk in the Shropshire Hills. We returned to the area over the Easter weekend and walked some different routes. Such a beautiful area with walks for all ages and abilities. Hoping to return to the area in the near future for more exploring.

My 92 year old mother and I can here on holiday and really enjoyed our week so much to see and do. Some times the views and journey to attractions was almost as enjoyable as the many and varied places we visited

The Shropshire Hills contain some of the finest countryside in the UK and some of the most beautiful towns. The hills are accessible by all forms of transport, on foot, by bicycle and motor car, there are many footpaths, bridleways and paved roads. The Longmynd is a flat topped hill and in season is coloured purple with heather. It is an interesting place for bird watchers and there are several ponds where dragonflies can be observed. At one end there is the Gliding Station where gliders are winched up into the sky, it is possible to have a ride in one. Approaches to the Longmynd are by steep roads so you need to be careful. The views from the hill are fantastic.
A little further over from the Longmynd is the Stiperstones, it is rather more rocky than the Longmynd. From the car park you can walk up to the Devil's Chair to view the beautiful Shropshire landscape. The area around the Stiperstones is very interesting for anyone interested in industrial archaeology, there are several old lead mines in the area with a museum at Snailbeach and a good cafe at The Bog. Towns to visit are Church Stretton, Bishop's Castle and Ludlow. On a fine day in these hills you wouldn't believe that you were in England. A must place to visit.

The Stiperstones and Long Mynd offer fantastic opportunities for walking "off the beaten track" with virtually nobody else about. This is an unknown area with many and provides endless opportunities to vary routes due to the large number of rights of way created by miners when there was a thriving lead mining industry here.
The Snailbeach lead mine is the best preserved of the old mines but they are located all along the Stiperstones, and The Bog has an old school which now serves tea and locally made cakes in a scenic setting and is open daily from before Easter to end of October and staffed by volunteers.
Get on top of the Long Mynd and it's relaxing flat walking with great views, and go to the western end and see gliders being launched off the edge.
We stayed in Shelve, which was great for the western side, or try Church Stretton for the west

We took a lovely walk (more like a hike) through the scenic hills here. Would love to return on a clear sunny day for even more impressive views.
