Steam trains give a scenic 3 mile return trip along the side of Historic Rudyard Lake. This is the best way to see the beautiful lake and get to its attractions. The lake is where poet Rudyard Kipling's parents met at a picnic and named their child after the spot. Its an unspoilt place great for a family day out or picnic. There are toilets for our customers open 10.30 to 4pm when the trains are running and the Platform 2 cafe is open at weekends from April to October. There are special family event days throughout the year. See the website for details or email us for information.

We've come to this on a few occasions. It's a great day out! You can continue the walk after you've been on the steam train and there's even a little cafe at the station. It's great fun!

Step back in time and see real steam trains in action, its wonderful. Kids loveit, Dads, love it, its smells of coal, and they think its Thomas the Tank Engine.

Half term and what to do with 3 of our grandsons? They all like trains, and aged 18 months, three and six, so thought it a good idea to combine a train journey and picnic with the beautiful lake. The weather forecast was dry and luckily for once the weather man was right. The boys enjoyed the train ride, the... More

Thankyou for your review. I would just like to highlight that the lake and the local council own all the facilities outside of the railway premises and so the lack of any picnic table is something for them but we will raise it based on your review. We have a large seating area at the station for our customers using... More

If you are looking for a relaxed walk then look no further. The scenery is fantastic as is the array of wildlife that it is possible to see.

Visited today, personally I love things like this, admire the dedication of people who give their time to keep these places running, had a nice time then walked the rest of the way round the lake

We live close to this attraction and thought we would have a ride on the train, we missed the first one but went for a walk to the lake and back in time for the next one. A lovely gentle ride followed by a coffee and cake after the return journey, Sat outside with our brew in lovely sunshine that... More

Lovely little steam railway that the younger ones will love in the beautiful surroundings of Rudyard Lake. Really friendly people and a nice little cafe to wait in. Free car parking at the station. Combined with a walk (about 5 miles) around the lake this would make a great afternoon out for families and dog walkers. Plenty of places to... More
