Quality convict stonework
Oct 2021
We heard that this bridge was a must-see and we were not disappointed. Amazing, quality stonework. We walked from the Female Factory to the bridge and because it had been raining, we could not avoid walking in mud. Better to visit this bridge from a bitumen road leading to it.

Amazing bit of convict heritage
Sep 2021
We stopped at Ross after seeing the town and the bridge feature on the reality tv series ‘The Amazing Race’. We parked in the area outside the wool store and then walked down to the bridge. The quality of the engineering and the stone masonry is still amazing. We had been told there are platypus in the area surrounding the bridge, but they didn’t show themselves for us. (Apparently twilight is the best viewing time.) From the bridge we did the easy 30 minute circuit walk, visiting the stables carved into the sandstone hillside then across to the female factory location. The interpretative centre details the hardships the female convicts endured including being forcibly separated from their children. From the factory site we strolled back up past the original church and back to the main street where lunch beckons at the nearby bakery. Ross is a charming little historic township and an ideal stop to break the journey between Hobart and Launceston.

Great stop over
Sep 2021
Ross is a lovely town and a great place to stop on the highway (skip past Campbell Town and come here!). We love the bridge and walking round the rest of the town.

Bridge with character

Wow! I was mesmerised by this beautiful old bridge which I believe is the third oldest bridge in Australia.
I liked all the carvings and intricate details.
Stairs are located on both sides either side of the bridge.

On the Ross side of the bridge, you can pull off the road into a small riverside area, for a better view of this lovely historic bridge

Lovely bridge and town

We love stopping in Ross on the way up the highway - it is a nicer spot than Campbell Town. The bridge is beautiful and a must see on your way up or down the Highway.

Convict built bridge
Mar 2020
This 1830's convict built bridge is a beautiful example of the convict stonemason's art. It was chiselled out by hand by British convicts transported from Britain. It is so strong it is still in use today

Another Beautiful Bridge built by Convicts!!
Feb 2020
It was a lovely day and my photos did this bridge the justice it deserves. Lovely winding stairs on each side, and a very scenic river with several ducks and ducklings in the area at the time! A picnic area is on site where once can sit back and enjoy the view and the excellent workmanship of days gone by!

It is amazing to see how the convicts made this wonderful bridge. The work that has gone into it is truly amazing.
