Established in 1963 the West Coast Heritage Centre Zeehan has continued to grow and offers visitors a comprehensive experience and understanding of the history, heritage and culture of the Tasmanian West Coast. Visitors can experience everything from an Edwardian picture show in the historic Gaiety Theatre to the modern day underground mine simulation as part of their visit. The galleries and exhibits highlight the efforts of the pioneers', both men, women and children who carved an existence from the remote wilderness in search of Tasmanian mineral wealth and developed the region as we know it today.

A very comprehensive museum but it was expensive for a family. $55 for a family is alot to spend when the kids attention span can only take in so much. Places like this should be encouraging families to enter and learn, not turn them away because of the cost, which we noticed several families did. For example $30 for a... More

We initially drove through Zeehan without stopping but after talking to a couple on the Wilderness Railway we returned to visit the Heritage Centre and it was well worth it. The sign as you enter say's it all "we are bigger on the inside than we look". There is an amazing history of the West Coast mining area and logging... More

We broke out Cradle Mountain to Strahan with a stop-over in Zeehan. I wish we allowed more time to soak up the information in this incredibly rich heritage centre in this small town. There were displays which neatly explained to kids what mining was (which I had been doing a terrible job of in the car), including a re-creation of... More

Great collection of minerals, old mining equipment and photographs. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Very informative. Strangely, the on street parking is for very short times e.g. 1/4 hour. In Zeehan? There were virtually no cars in the main street!

Thank you for your review of our business. We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed your experience with us. Unfortunately those spaces need to be timed to allow deliveries to be made efficiently to other businesses on the street. However, we proudly offer free all day parking at the front and to the side of the centre. More

The museaum is well worth the entry price. Stop in each gallery and really soak up the history of the west coast. The mseaum certainly held the interest of all of the family. Suggest you allow over 90 minutes to do it justice. Very informative and visual.

I admit that I went in here under sufferance. I was taking photos of the town & the rest of my family went in & bought me a ticket. So in I went, thinking it would be boring. I couldn't be more wrong. I actually found it so very interesting. So much so, that we couldn't spend the amount of... More

I'ts over 30 years since I've been there, I was impressed then but this time was blown away with what one can see. There is a huge rock collection, followed by photo galleries, underground Mt Lyell tunnel system. Out the back follow the signs to the Gaiety Theatre, Freemason's Lodge, Court House and engine display. We stayed 3 hrs and could have stayed... More

I can remember going there as a child some 40 years ago and my mother bought me a small board with a local rock/mineral display. Obviously my interests and attention span have developed beyond just rocks. Vintage hats off to the committee that maintains and develops the centre. It is fantastic. I managed to attend on the annual open day... More

This is an excellent museum of the early days of Zeehan, its history and the mining industry. It covers a diverse range of topics and has both indoor and outdoor exhibits. It is easy to spend several hours here. Some of the unusual aspects include the Gaiety Theatre with two silent movies running, the court house and Freemason's lodge. Outdoors... More
