This is a nice nature walk or bike ride. Rustling river, multiple birds, and sceanic bluffs. We found it hard to find, no signs on Hyw 16. We had to ask for directions. Smooth path for strolling, wheelchair accessible. And the Blackhand has been gone for almost 200 years.

I visited Blackhand State Preserve for a solo hike. I was overwhelmed by breathtaking views, and friendly wildlife! I had the area to myself and was rewarded with close several encounters with deer that did not bound off! I took the hiking trails for the first 4.6 miles, and returned to my starting point via the bike trail. A must... More

My dad and I used to go for walks out there back in the 1960's when it was still privately owned land~there were no restrooms, signs talking about it or paved trail but it was still a beautiful place to hike. I moved away from this area for over 40 years and didn't get to visit Black Hand Gorge but... More

We came hear with our dog. Some easy trails to walk and a pretty neat old lock from the canal days. Not far from newark or Zanesville. Pretty area. We enjoyed our day trip.

Blackhand Gorge is a must see for anyone who loves nature. You can walk, bike or run on the paved trail. You do have to stay on the paved trail or the marked dirt trails as this is a nature preserve. Its beautiful year round but especially nice when its hot because the trees form a wonderful canopy over most... More

I've done this stretch quite a few times because it's convenient and absolutely gorgeous! Easy in and out at the livery. It's about 1 1/2 hours from Brownsville to the gorge and 3 hours if you put in at Staddens Bridge. There's a couple shallow spots that give you a little trouble but not bad at all and the views... Our family visited this park for the 2nd time in the last couple of years to get some awesome family photo's for my Christmas cards. A fallen log, the railroad tracks, high cliff walls and beach area all beautiful stops along the trail (You need to take the gorge rim trail to see 85% of these - The trail will... More

Great bit of history and nature. Not very easy for wheelchairs. Bike and hiking trails. Free! Fishing and hunting permitted with state licenses. On outside of city. Highway close. Free place to take the family. Picnic areas. Can rent canoes to go down the river.

Lovely preserve that caters to walkers and hikers. Expect to find families and friendly dogs out there enjoying great weather and the opportunity to escape busy workdays for some peace and quiet.
