My family went on a hourglass crystal digging trip. It was very windy but otherwise pleasant with the temperature at the lower 80s. It was beautiful toward sunset. Drinking water, and plenty of sunblocks are essential for the trip.

Stopped by on way to Kansas one time - have returned 2 more times better equipped. Is an addictive form of treasure hunting and the finds are fun to share with my family and coworkers. Read up on tips before going if you are traveling a distance. Supplies can make a world of difference for the enjoyment of your visit.

When down on the salt bed it was easy to imagine yourself on the moon's surface. The flat, white grainy surface is broken up by holes in the ground giving the look of craters. Bring digging tools and containers for your crystals. We went on a very windy day, the blowing sand was a bit brutal. Bring sunscreen, you are... More

The Salt Plains were awesome! We dug and recovered about 10 lbs. of selenite. Make sure you bring extra clothes to change into because you will get dirty. Also, bring shovels and a container to put your crystals in when you find them. Make sure you stop at the info center first if you need to use the restroom because... More

We went to the N.W. part of Oklahoma to visit 4 state parks in 1 weekend. We stayed in Woodward and did Boiling Springs (quickest visit depending on how long you hike around) in under an hour. Then Alabaster Caverns took about 2 and 1/2 hours, which includes waiting an hour for the next tour. The next day we spent... More

First of all, it is a pity the state does not take care of this place. That being said, we did look for fossils and found the whole idea intriguing. You really don't need to dig too much. We started to and I was a little discouraged after not finding any. So we walked further into the beach and many... More

Excellent automobile trail through the refuge. Saw a couple of deer but that's it. Appears to be very dry and overgrown.

Fun place to dig for crystals. Families all over, kids enjoying digging in the sand. We had a picnic lunch after digging for awhile. Going back to dig some more. Peaceful place, it is wheelchair accessible. Seen one lady in a wheelchair getting around ok. Sign did say pets welcome, keep on leash. But didnt see any pets while we... More

I probably saw 50+ frogs jumping into the stream as I walked the trail. It is free and definitely worth the visit. I enjoyed the overlook on to the lake and seeing the birds. This is definitely worth future trips.
