Great vintage railway run by a really dedicated group of volunteers. Sumpter Valley Railroad has an amazing program where you can become an engineer for the day. Far more than a cab ride, you actually run one of their locomotives. Either a 1920 vintage oil burning Mikado class locomotive or a earlier vintage wood fired Heisler provide a once in... More

My wife and 3 grandchildren ages 5, 7 and 10 recently did the round trip train ride and had a blast. Everyone associated with the railroad were fantastic, fun and very customer oriented. The train robbery was so much fun and the actors were great. You could tell they also were enjoying being there. The train robbers met with the... More

Took the round trip ride from the Mcewen Depot up to the Sumpter Depot and back. Rode in the open car in the sunshine. Explored the Sumpter Dredge while up there. Watched some kids panning for gold. Volunteers run the train and are very knowledgeable and friendly. It was a great time and I would recommend it to all ages.

I want to go back because we visited in april and the train does not start until May, but we were able to walk around the area and look at a lot of old train parts and things. Everyone may not be into that sort of thing but if you are its worth a stop

The Sumpter area is a very interesting trip into when ecological concerns didn't exist and the valley is a strong testament to that. Piles of stones line the area where the old dredge tore up the entire countryside in search for gold. The Sumpter Valley Railway is a really cool old steam train that takes a short trip through part... More

So where in Oregon can you see, smell and almost taste what it was like to be on a logging train? Sumpter, Oregon. Occasionally, enjoy a real gold rush train robbery too. Sumpter Valley also has or had one of the highest concentraions of gold of any mining place in the world! In fact over one cubic yard of the... More

We really enjoyed this. Do call ahead and make sure of the hours we just happened to get there right before the train left it seems to run 2 times a day on Saturday and Sunday and sometimes for special events. The people running this were very kind and knowledgeable about the whole operation and watching them put water in... More

It was a lot of fun to visit the old station, or one that had been re-built to look like the original. The rail cars were interesting and a lot of fun to walk around in, and they had been some what restored to the original. Over a fun side trip, and alot of fun for kids although I think... More

Both adults and children in our group loved the train ride. The conductor and crew are knowledgeable and friendly, sharing the nitty-gritty (and very interesting!) details of the Sumpter Valley Railway and train.
