Nice Retreat when Hot

This cave provided a nice cool "hike" for the kids on a hot day. It is just not that beautiful. If you have been to any other caves in the surrounding states, you will be greatly disappointed. If you have never been in a cave before, give it a try and then on your next trip go to Lewis and... More

We had a group of 12-14 people that did a self guided tour through the cave when camping at Sun River. It was a neat experience and a welcomed retreat from the hot weather. The kids did dress warm but many actually got too cold so, really, dress warm or at least bring warm clothing. Also, we didn't have quite... More

The experience begins with a lantern rentals and ends with a sense of wonder as you ascend back up to the visitor's center. The walk through the Lava Tube is just rugged enough to feel like an adventure, but easy enough to take the whole family.

If you're a happy visitor of natural places and spaces and you like underground / cave environments... definitely check this out. If you're not sure, you may not get much out of it. The footing is very rocky and uneven and of course it is pitch dark... so it isn't a relaxing stroll. It is not a strenuous activity, but... More

This is an unusual lava cave as it is very smooth relatively flat, so an easy hike. It is not a loop so you hike in an out. It's also helpful to bring a headlamp or other source of light although you can rent lights at the cave

My kids love the idea of caves (e.g. romanticized stories of hidden treasure, secret tunnels etc), making this is a "must-see" portion of the Newberry Volcanic N.M. Not handicap accessible, and is a very interesting piece of geology. That said, a mile underground doesn't offer families much variety. Halfway through, even my two boys (14 & 12) were ready to... I'm used to the Ape Caves up in Cougar, WA, so I was excited to come here. The best tip of advice? Get there RIGHT when they open. We were the first ones here on a Sunday morning and were the first ones into the cave, and it was so great going through just the two of us. On the... More

This is a pretty amazing lava cave that goes a full mile in one direction and right under the main highway in the area. Larger in size than one expects, it is an interesting and fun adventure. I went with a group of young adults who loved it, but if you have small children, you will need to be prepared... More

Prepare for a damp to wet loose gravel sand footing, sandals are not the best. Rent the lanterns, a flashlight will not provide the same experience the lanterns do, and do not try to share a lantern, its fun when each person can find interesting rock formations that others may have missed. Dress in layers. I was getting chilled by... More
