What a fun experience! On our 4 hour trip we saw bull elk, a brown bear, a bald eagle, egret, ducks and beautiful butterflies! The train follows the Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers. The volunteer staff were so nice and friendly. Lunch was served, but we were glad that we brought some snacks of our own.

Excursion trains come in all shapes and sizes. This one has some excellent river scenery in an area that is minimally accessible by car. Unlike the Cumbres and Toltec or the Durango to Silverton trains in Colorado, it lacks vintage steam equipment, grand and varied scenery and a rich history. Operated by volunteers- who are uniformly nice folks filled with... More

I went on the Train Robbery Excursion. Despite the rain and winds this ride turned out to be awesome! The Elgin Depot has a ticket office, gift shop, restrooms and indoor and outdoor waiting areas. There is plenty of parking too.Volunteers from the Friends of Joseph Branch, operate the excursion train and they do a wonderful job. I was made... More

This train follows the Grande Ronde River, then at the confluence with the Wallowa River, it goes up that one. The three old passenger cars show their age, but they are constantly being restored. Up the branch, a bunch of robbers on horseback shoot up the train and stop it. Great fun. Robbers, saloon girls, and even a preacher.

The trip has great views of the area and the staff is interesting and knowledgable .we loved the opera unity to visit with other train enthusiasts and the opertunity to see wildlife along the river.

Elgin train trip 26 September 2015 Drove east from Portland on Friday afternoon. Elgin is an interesting small old mill town in eastern Oregon. Stayed at motel in LaGrande Friday night. Breakfast in LaGrande Saturday morning, drove out to Elgin. Elgin is an interesting town. I would have liked to have more time there to poke around for a few... More

We had a good day out with Eagle Cap. It’s a nicely restored train run entirely with volunteers. The train itself is in great shape and the view along the river makes for a fun day out. The scenery is pretty consistent along the way so it’s not a problem to get good views. They do not over-pack the train... More

Train went slow, river was way low, people on river side didn't switch for return trip, "historian" was only about ten minutes. But food was delicious, staff was friendly, saw some deer and a coyote and the car was the right temperature. Felt like my ticket price was for more than my entertainment. Save this passageway, let me spend four... More

Very disappointing train ride. We had three of us in our group and we were not able to sit together. Train traveled very slow and some scenery on only one side of train. Honestly, the scenery is better driving around the area. Personally, this was a waste of time and money for our group. On the positive side.... the staff... More

A group from our church signed up for a special train ride. There was a sheriff and a robber and girls from the saloon prancing through the train every so often. To see us off some cowboys rode their horses along side the train.
