We drove out just to see The Painted Hills. We were definitely not disappointed. Incredible beauty of nature. I could stand for hours and not get tired of the view. I did notice as the sun moved in and out of the clouds the colors...More

We visited the Painted Hills near Mitchell, Oregon one day (see separate review for the Carrol rim trail) and both the John Day Fossil Bed National Monument interpretive center and the Historic Cant Ranch. All, if you're a history/geology-archeaology buff are the place to see....More

The museum is an excellent learning experience with a great display of actual fossils. It's modern and in a great setting overlooking the surrounding hills and mountains. It's conveniently located adjoining a paved highway. The scenery in this area is absolutely beautiful.

If you are a paleontology buff, especially if you lean towards the "fur-balls", this is a must see stop. NO DINOSAURS HERE. But you can see almost the entire record of post-dinosaur mammal history. Like taking Badlands, Agate Fossil Beds and Ashfall and rolling them...More

The long drive was worth it. This is a remote spot with incredible views. The Visitors center is a must. The Painted hills are some of the best I've ever seen. Very desert landscape.

I honestly don't know. Your best bet is to call the Monument's Visitor Center or perhaps the community of John Day's visitor center or Chamber of Commerce.
