In John Day for the 2017 ECLIPSE. got up early today and drove to the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center at the Sheep Rock Unit. It's just 2 miles off Hwy 26 ( turnoff is 7 miles west of Dayville). Did the 18 minute movie FIRST...More

We visited the Painted Hills near Mitchell, Oregon one day (see separate review for the Carrol rim trail) and both the John Day Fossil Bed National Monument interpretive center and the Historic Cant Ranch. All, if you're a history/geology-archeaology buff are the place to see....More

The museum is an excellent learning experience with a great display of actual fossils. It's modern and in a great setting overlooking the surrounding hills and mountains. It's conveniently located adjoining a paved highway. The scenery in this area is absolutely beautiful.

The long drive was worth it. This is a remote spot with incredible views. The Visitors center is a must. The Painted hills are some of the best I've ever seen. Very desert landscape.

I honestly don't know. Your best bet is to call the Monument's Visitor Center or perhaps the community of John Day's visitor center or Chamber of Commerce.
