My review is average because the place is an OK place. Not something my husband and I would do again but maybe if we were bored and our kiddos were with us and we had nothing better to do. $1 a pound and $7 to...More

Have been to the mine 2xs, last year. Excellent experience and had lots of exhausting fun hammering out the eggs. This time, despite the mine's website information, we discovered that the mine is NOT open 7 days a week. This after driving all the way...More

Apparently mines are prevented from posting signs in national forests, because there just aren't enough signs pointing the way to the Lucky Strike Mine...but to my great surprise, we went up those logging roads and found it....only to see that it was closed!!! Grrrr. But,...More

It was an adventure ( kind of a nail biter) just getting there on the logging road, but once there the staff was friendly, helpful and eager to get us out to dig our own thunder eggs. The kids had a great time, and we...More

We showed up shortly after 8 am and had a great time. Janice, the proprietress, helped us sight the eggs, then coached us on digging them out. We ended up with so many that I had to ship them home. She cut two of them...More

The Lucky Strike Mine website has pathetically inadequate directions for travel. The website map is a small sketch on which the given forest road numbers do not show up on a USGS topographic map, nor on a Forest Service Motorized Vehicle map, nor on a...More

My 7 year old Son and I dug thunder eggs here. We had a great time, and there is a lot of thunder eggs to dig on the hillside. It takes a while to drive to the location, but it was worth it.

Hi Holly...we are going to try and follow your directions. Thank you so much!!!! I'm unclear about where you say 'stay on this road'...do you stay on the road that supposedly ends (but maybe does not?) or do you turn onto the 250..thank you for any help!!!

Well, read the reviews that left the driving directions in question. Do you have a specific map PDFs that I could down load? We are considering buying some property to build a modest home and retire in Mitchell.

We just used the GPS on the car. Google Maps is actually pretty good about showing all the national forest roads. We headed West from Mitchell and entered the forest from Route 26. Here's the map on their website. I think... More
