One of the relatively safer neighborhoods in Portland. However, as many others pointed out, the price range is on the higher end. It was nice to walk along the street, but not an ideal place to make purchases for me as many of the items were above my budget.

No trip to Portland is complete without a day spent shopping and eating in the Northwest neighborhood of Portland. The Locals just call it Northwest, few if any, call it by the old name of Nob Hill.
On NW23rd you can go to Lush for Bath Bombs, Elizabeth Street for great trendy clothes and Balvo for a great meal and if you have room, Papa Haydn for dessert.

As in all neighborhoods in Portland, a Starbucks is always nearby .. as is Mia Gelato when the need for fresh chocolate menthe gelato or peach gelato strikes you. Moonstruck Chocolates makes fresh chocolate truffles all day, to satisfy any chocolate lovers urges.

If you need something for your house, no need to go farther than Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Kitchen Kaboodle or Restoration Hardware.

After you have had your fill of NW23rd, walk down to NW 21st which is known as Restaurant Row. Serratto, Cafe Mingo, Lucy's Table, Blue Moon and close to Northrup St is Paleys Place and Wildwood.
Every one of these restaurants is good and every visitor should try to eat in at least one or two. At the end of the day, when you are too full and too tired to walk any more, you can hop on the Streetcar at 21st and Johnson and let it carry you back home or to your hotel downtown.

This is a great area to walk around, check out cute boutiques (no Target here), get some tasty treats, decorate your home and do a lot of Christmas shopping. 21st and 23rd are the core shopping streets, and one can make an easy loop of the parallel streets.

Some of my favorites:
*Kitchen Kabodle - think Sur La Table but bigger; everything an aspiring chef could need

* Seattle Coffee Gear-- be warned--staff are quite enthusiastic about all things coffee & have enough "energy" to tell you about all of it. Got questions about coffee, coffee makers, and coffee accessories--get your answers, and your fix here.

*Phil's Meat Market--Get the Bento. They offer chicken, pork and beef in their own marinades. The beef is in Korean BBQ and is so tender, juicy and delicious. One or two kabobs served on rice is a perfect afternoon snack.

*Salt & Straw--so what if its wet and cold out? Its Portland. This place is open late and offers flavors like Mincemeat and Fruitcake for nostalgic ice cream fans, but also delicious salted caramel goodness and other delights. So popular, our hotel even had it on their room service menu by the pint!

*The Meadow--It's high end salt and chocolate. What more could you want???

*Moonstruck--Delicious chocolates prepared in so many ways. Don't go inside hungry and maybe set a budget before you walk in...

*Little Big Burger--a very small food menu with a more diverse beer menu, the burgers are tasty and the truffle fries are the perfect accompaniment.

*Ken's Artisan Bakery--Need a sandwich or cup of tea? Hit up Ken's for a Lilac Oolong, a very good Canelé (perfect carmelization), or a toasted sandwich on great bread. Skip the Oregon croissant, however, it was a great idea with poor execution, sorry, Ken.

*Fred Meyer--currently open during construction, whatever you might need, from carrots to flip flops to SD cards, you'll find it there. Parking garage as well as parking lot available.

There's plenty for everyone, from Poplandia (just popcorn) to a crafts store from a wandering Nomad, this 'hood is great for a stroll, a bite to eat, or a pick me up.

My wife and I covered quite a bit of ground in one week of our stay in near downtown Portland. We tried to cover as many neighborhoods as we could. Our best one, hands down was the Nob Hill District. How delightful!! First the setting is leafy and well shaded. Second, the food selection is wide and good. Third, the shops are unique and fun.

I wished we had chosen this neighborhood to stay for the week. Next time we will find a place to stay within this District.

We never miss a visit to this quaint and quirky part of Portland. The shops, boutiques and restaurants in this area are all fun and unique. For the first-time visitor this is a must-see area.
We enjoyed pizza at the Escape From New York and in the past have had really innovative and nice meals at both Paley's Place and Wildwood.
It was a cold, rainy day in Portland and the Cinnamon Dolce Latte from the Starbuck's in the area was made just right!

Nob Hill benefits from some of the oldest architecture in Portland, much of which remains as private residences. You can drive up the steep, winding hill and enjoy the curious, often very large houses, or simply wander among the many shops and restaurants on NW23rd Street. Rather like areas of Berkeley, CA, there is a laid back, liberal vibe, without the awful ubiquitous hippies which tarnish the Bay Area town. Rich lefties and families with their kids, the traffic is heavy (human and automotive), so go on a week day, or early morning sunday.

My sister lives in NW, lovely mix of houses and apartments, so many very good restaurants, fun bars, LGBT welcoming community. A neighborhood yet fun for us visitors. Wine bars, lots of ethnic restaurants, a very pleasant mix of day or night fun!

Fun quirky neighborhood with shopping and great restaurants. Walkable but sometimes hard to find parking. I would suggest using the great Portland Street Car system if you are coming to this neighborhood from downtown or other areas.

NW 23rd is a unique area of Portland with its many different architectural homes and the cool part is how close they have built these houses next to each other. Great walking around the residential areas and down 21st and 23rd. A great number of delicious and diverse restaurants, stores, pubs, martini bars and even the Aveda Spa.
