History, Scandals, Ghosts...sign me up! This is such a fascinating tour, learning about the hidden, seedy past of Portland. I had no idea these tunnels were here when I moved to Portland. In living here, I would hear so many stories about the tunnels, that I had to go check it out myself! I love to learn about history, the... More

Expected a walking tour underneath a part of the city. In reality you're only doing a little walking around underneath the restaurant where the tours start. The tour lasts about 100 minutes, most of which you're listening to stories. It's a neat gimmick but adjust your expectations accordingly. There is not a lot of ground covered, this is not a... Men were drugged by shanghaiers and sold to sailing ship captains as slaves; some never returned and those who did were never the same. White slavers kidnapped women and forced them into a life of prostitution, and they died of it. I stepped into one of the holding cells that are still in the Underground and stepped right back out!... More

Everyone should take this tour to get both a good look at the interesting history of Portland. Shanghai'ing was alive and well in this city from mid-1800s to mid-1900s. It was surreal to stand in the cell where kidnapped men had be held captive and see the artifacts of the time. They are also said to be haunted, although not... More

Underground. Was warm. Guide was great but of course everything he said started with last week I saw. Lots of good stories. They have hanging lights so it's a dimly lite tunnel. I really felt like we only went in a 50ft circle but it was cool. For $18 it was worth it. Would NOT take children to much to... More

Great thing to do, very interesting tour through historic underground Portland! Highly recommended! Not for young children under the age of 12. Pretty spooky but more on the fascination side. Incredible piece of history

Take heed! We did not enjoy this tour. Not enough history, too many spooky stories. Some people may prefer haunting stories over historical relevance, if so this tour is for you and you may rate it higher than 1 star. Our guide signed off on every story with "that volunteer was never to be seen again" after explaining a certain... More

I liked the tour but it could have perhaps offered more in terms of materials or artifacts. Tour guide was very nice but there was just a bit too much paranormal fluffing.

Yep - that's pretty much it. I mean, it was a more interesting basement than your average basement, so it's got that going for it I guess. NOTE: there is no evidence that the Shanghai tunnels were ever actually used to "Shanghai" anyone.

I had always heard about people getting "shanghaied", but this tour really shows you what happened and lets you get a better idea of what happened and why and how it was able to happen so easily. There is so much information shared, much of it from first hand accounts the organization has gathered. It also shows you more of... More
