It was opened as a history museum in 1905 by the local chapter of the Sorosis Club and is one of Oregon's oldest museums. Adjacent to the Museum is the Anderson Homestead built by Swedish Settlers in the late 1880's and moved to its current site in the 1970's. This was a very cozy and interesting museum. It gave me a good overview of the area and the fort in particular. Docents were helpful and friendly. The Anderson Homestead was very interesting as well. One comment would be that some items weren't labeled in the museum that I was curious about.

Not a traditional army fort. This fort was established to help people settle at the end of the Oregon trail. This was used until the 1850s and turned into a museum by around 1905. A lot to see for $8 dollar, a person

Although this doesn't look like a fort it is what's left. We were greeted outside and were shown inside, they even held the door for us. After a short explanation about the fort we were on our way around the museum. Could not believe the stuff they put in this building. Don't miss the transportation building. The Anderson home was interesting and the cookies are great

This is a great place to learn about the early life of Oregon or the west. They have the town's original fice alert bells. They would ring a bell that corresponded to a particular area so the residents would know where to go to fight a fire. There is a carriage garage filled with well-preserved carriages and so much more.

This museum could be so much more than it is! The history of the fort and local farming is good, but it seems that the museum has accepted every single item that old people wanted to donate. Thus, there is no organized story to help understand what you are looking at. The grounds are pleasant and there is a dramatic view of Mt. Adams.

Interesting history. The house has artifacts and the docents know the history well. There are also so vintage carriages with are really cool to see.

I love museums. I seldom tour a museum I don't like. Today was the exception. This "museum" is nothing more than an amalgamation of donated items. There is no rhyme or reason to the displays. When someone donates something, docents stick it somewhere. Lots of artifacts with no captions, interpretation or dates. No flow or continuity. No overall theme or message other than "Here is some old stuff to look at."

This is a great museum if you are into the period of exploration/settlement during the pioneer period of Oregon's statehood. There is a great collection of antique wagons from local hotels, merchants and ranchers that is stored on site and is one of the most complete period collections in the west, according to experts. It's a must see if you are an old wagon buff.

This is small house that was the Surgeon's dwelling inside of the fort. We enjoyed the period furnishings and the displays of antique implements and photos from the period. This museum is worth your time, the folks guiding you are very friendly and knowledgable.

The main building was constructed as a lavish, for the time, home for an officer at Fort Dalles. It's not furnished as an officer's home; instead, it's a collection of donated items illustrating the history of the The Dalles and the Columbia Gorge. There are some cute little gems, such as example schoolwork by Oregon students that was displayed at the World's Fair. Across the street, is an old homestead that was moved to the location for preservation purposes. The volunteer staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed chatting with them about The Dalles.
