Little chateau with large English park

Scenic little chateau on small island surrounded by water and great English park. The exterier moved me more than the interier, but both have strong romantic feeling.

First things first: Do start with viewing the video which is shown in the former stables, as it includes a kind of guided tour/explanation plus an interview with the last inhabitant. After that, take lots of time to roam the rooms, all open to the public. It is not difficult to imagine how daily life must have been for the... More

A wonderful mansion showing what posh homes must have looked like in the old times. Not to forget wonderful gardens and a forest nearby.

A local host kindly shared this special home with us during a recent trip to Groningen. The house provides and interesting glimpse into country manor life in the 18th century and beyond with rooms filled with furnishings much as the family might have left them. Nearly 3 kilometres of grounds--narrow but long--as a peaceful adjunct to the house.

Lovely old building that has been restored quite well. Interesting and fun. Walking around gives a good impression of what life might have been like for Groningen's aristocracy in years gone by. Despite visiting in April, the gardens had hardly any colour and seemed a bit neglected. The Fraeylemaborg was our 2nd 'borg' in as many days, but we felt... More

It's like a big house with a green park around it. It's very comfortable walking around in the castle as all the furniture is still in original condition and it seems that the family is still living there. The bed is a bit untidy, flowers are in every corner, plants on the windowsill. You don't really feel that you're in... More

This was a nice little stop on a day spent driving around Groningen - I would say you can see it all in about 30 minutes. Staff was friendly and it was an easy visit of a fairly small but well-preserved castle. We enjoyed looking at all the furniture and understanding how the castle was used and run throughout history.... More

Unlike many castles or mansions, that have been converted into a museum, Fraeylemaborg still the breathes the original setting, thanks to the furniture and items from the past. We visited the castle on our way to Stadskanaal in Groningen. There is an informative paper guide that will point you to the specialities of every room. We enjoyed it very much.... More

The tower and its farm are just a great (historic) place to be. It is built on a lordship, which is freely accessible (donations accepted). A small entrance fee is required to enter the tower. The tower has some changing exhibits, check their website to see what's on. The farm is now converted into a restaurant, ideal for a high... More

If you say the name Slochteren in the Netherlands, you connect this automatically with the huge natural gas field, discovered in the 60's of last century. This discovery changed the energy landscape in the Netherlands forever. But that Slochteren is also a beautiful quiet village where you can visit the mansion and grounds of Fraeylemaborg, I did not know. But,... More
