There are not many ancient towns left in China. Jianshui has been partially preserved. Still see most of the old town and how people live but lots of renovation and new builds. All mixed up.

A pretty walled town with very attractive sights such as the imposing Confucius temple. At night there is a nice lampoon lit shopping street with ceramic and teashops and fine restaurants. The old folks dancing in the park are a slice of the charming side of the Chinese way of life.

We were impressed with our visit to Jianshui, it didn’t appear over commercialised and had a real day to day living feel. The pedestrian streets through the old town give a glimpse of days gone by, with shops and buildings highlighting the craftsmanship and styles of past dynasties.

A very nice, if small, old city, more genuine than most and not very touristic. Nice restaurants and shops. Well worth a visit.

It is a great city worth visiting. I was travelling from Kunming to the rice terraces not sure if it is worth stopping here on our way. I did in the end and spent whole 3 days in here. It is beautiful and authentic. After seeing Dali and Lijiang ancient towns I can definitely say that this one much more authentic in comparison to others. There are no tauts harassing you, making you buy things. You can just wander around being the only white person in sight. If you are wondering whether you'd like to stop over here or not I can assure you, you will not regret it.

Jianshui Tian'anmen (Chaoyanglou) and the ancient street have more than 1,200 years of history. The small town of Jianshui is one of China’s national key heritage sites and cultural towns.
It is said that Mengzi and Jianshui fought for the origin of the rice-line. There is a Chinese saying “To build water and eat rice noodles and baked tofu.” To come to Jianshui, you have to eat rice noodles.
To get a good appreciation of the town, it is best to get a tour from a Chinese speaking friend or an organized tour. Then there are voice and text translation apps which can be used to converse with the locals. Although it is an ancient town, like most Chinese, they are up to date on mobile phones and technology, and ahead of most North Americans when it comes to mobile banking and on the spot money transfers/payments.

It is about 3 hours of train ride from Kunming.
Then when you reach Jianshui, take a cab to town for 30 rmb.
The place is not too big. But it is still worthwhile to stay a night to have a beautiful view of the ancient gate.
Nobody speaks English. So be prepared with your translator in your phone.
Do try their Roast Duck.
