Whether taking the very steep path from sea level to 450 asl or taking a taxi $15-20 round trip) this is a ‘must do’ in San Juan del Sur. Be aware that even when taking a taxi there are still over 100 steps to climb...More
Walking up a steep hill to visit the Christ of Mercy statue from the other end of the beach was tough going in the heat, but well worth the reward of spectacular views. It took about an hour to reach the statue. We walked along...More
You can see this impressive, colossal statue of the Christ of Mercy from "town" when you are in San Juan del Sur. It is situated 120 meters above sea level and reminds me a lot of the Christ statue in Havana, Cuba. It is the...More
Normally I look for places from you can appreciate the city and this was the best place. If you are thinking go walking is possible (as I did) but if you are not used to hiking can be extremely exhausting!!! Entrance fee is cheap and...More
According to some, it would seem like the little walk up to the mirador is the equivalent of hiking Everest--except in the heat...so...I don't know a good comparison. Anyway, considering that from the northwest end of the beach (the end closest to the mirador) to...More
Ok, I just about died walking up, lol. Be prepared that it's pretty rigorous! It's also $2 for non-Nicaraguans. The view is oh so worth it, though. What a lovely place. They also have a small chapel and bathrooms, which is convenient.

If you're in SJDS you're going to see this statue perched on top of the hill and you'll be attracted, so go. I'd advise to go early morning or late afternoon when the real heat is gone, the light is also better for photographs then...More
This was a late afternoon, before sunset hike. It was quite a strenuous slope,iPhone claimed I did 38 flights of stairs. Wear good shoes, and be ready to pay $1 per person to enter. Even though the sign says they close at 5pm they are...More

Yes cruise port is very close, maybe 1/4mile from where we started. I recommend walking along the beach (cross a small river) until you get to the last road, then take a right. The last road looks kind of like a concrete drainage ditch but it's the only way off the beach. Looks a little sketchy but it's not. There are signs to direct you from there. No map needed.
