Visiting Strawberry Hill is a truly theatrical experience. On approach to the building it is immediately apparent from the whitewashed walls and crenelations that this is no ordinary stately home. Once inside the visitor will find the rooms magically lit by a unique collection of renaissance glass with a gloomy castle-like hall and grey gothic staircase leading dramatically to the magnificence of the gallery and state apartment. Between 2007 and 2015 the structure of the building was saved from ruin and the eccentric interiors have been fully restored to their late 18th century style. The restoration project has won major awards from the European Union, the Georgian Group, RICS and RHS, and is shortlisted as 2015's Best Tourism Project at the British Guild of Travel Writer's Awards. As well as guided tours and self-guided visits, we also offer events and family activities as well as an excellent cafe and shop.

Strawberry Hill House was the house of the famous poet and writer Horace Walpole and it is the firs, and probably most famous, example of Gothic architecture. It is a beautiful place, inside and outside. The garden is nice too, and all the facades well restored. Lovely place!

The house has been amazingly restored and there are helpful printed sheets and guides in each room. It is unlike a 'normal stately home visit as the collection, style and design is very unique. Definitely worth a visit.

We loved Strawberry Hill, guides with breadth of knowledge and very happy to answer questions. What a shock this house must have been to the neighbours when newly built! And what luck that it survived the centuries. Beautifully restored - wall coverings, paint colours, cornices and floors look perfect. Worth finding in west London suburbs and the excellent cafe supplies... More

I am so pleased you enjoyed your visit - thanks you for coming, and for making the effort to upload your review. You capture the importance of the place cleverly: unusual architecture out of the ordinary at the time of building, and the 'serendipity' of its survival, then the extraordinary restoration. Thanks too for acknowledging the volunteers you met, sharing... More

This was the home of Hugh Walpole and certainly is quirky, looks like a cross between a fairy tale castle and church. Some beautiful stain glass in the windows, which are all big and makes many of the rooms very light and bright. Some beautifully restored rooms. The guides in each room are excellent and love their job and very... More

This gem of a place is steeped in history from the 18th century to present day which is bought to life by the very well informed room stewards. I strongly recommend a visit. It ticks so many boxes, wonderfully laid out gardens, historical architecture and decoration, - you must see the stained glass in every room! family events (an Easter... More

Thank you for visiting us, and for taking the time to provide your kind review. I am very pleased that you enjoyed your visit. I do note your comments on our cafe furniture: it is functional, but you make a very fair point on it being inappropriate for the space. We have a new cafe proprietor this year who has... More

As a group of 20, we were fortunate to visit this lovely house out of season, when we could have a private tour of the house. It started with a welcome coffee/tea and we were then taken around in smaller groups, with the knowledgeable tour guides explaining the history of Horace Walpole's home, as well as the plans for it's...
