I just finished a docent led tour of St Nicholas Croation Catholic Church in Pittsburgh with its astonishing murals by Maxo Vanka, a 20th century modernist, pacifist, and social critic. They evoke Eastern European church fresco painting and Diego Rivera, but are unique for their...More

These murals in St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale are an unusual combination of religious themes and commentary on social justice. Monumental in scale. The interior is unlike anything you've ever seen. Better appreciated during Mass or on a guided tour Saturday afternoons.

The artistry, the messages, and the legend of the artist make visiting this church an extraordinary cultural event. Maxo Vanka was a genius that somehow was missed by the art world at large. Timeless experience. You don't need to have an interest in religion or...More

Definitely the highlight my trip to Pittsburgh, besides visiting family. I also visited the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Mattress Factory, but this was a real buried treasure. The strength, beauty and messages in these murals really do correspond to the murals of the...More

Others have noted that this is indeed worth your time; there's nothing new I can add. However, let me comment about signage: yes, it's tricky to get to the church. Things would be FAR much easier if the church would invest in better signage. Have...More

As noted by other reviewers, this church has a series of outstanding murals painted many decades ago by Maxo Vanka. The murals reflect Mr. Vanka's Catholic faith, his Croatian heritage, and his anti-war and anti-industrial views. They are very thought-provoking, and can be appreciated by...More

Very unusual and character-filled murals reflecting 20th century Catholic art, but much more so 20th century social issues and response to WW I. Not pretty - but very interesting.

Maxo Vanka's murals, which decorate St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Millvale, are definitely worth a visit. Docent-led tours are offered on Saturdays from 11:00 - 1:00, but it is possible to see them at other times, if you call and...More

These murals need attention, because the small parish church struggles to maintain them, but what an amazing achievement. These murals combine modern and historical in terms of terms of style, technique and subject. Should be high on anyone's list who cares about art history.
