The Foundation welcomes visitors to explore daily life in one of Charleston's most exquisite dwellings. Located in Downtown Charleston near High Battery, the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, is widely recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the National Historic Landmark in 1955, and the house served as the Foundation's headquarters for 37 years. Today, the interiors are restored to their original 1808 grandeur and surrounded by formal gardens.

In contrast to it's sister property, the Aiken Rhett House, this home has been restored to its original condition. It is a lovely house and well worth seeing.

This grand old home has some of the most beautiful decorative cornices and detail work we've seen in any historic home. The highlight is, of course, that spectacular floating staircase - whatever has held it up all these years? The tour is a bit limited;...More

This is a beautiful house museum, built in 1808 and representative of the neoclassical architectural style. The floating staircase (free-flying staircase) is the highlight of the tour. Our docent, Louise, was friendly, knowledgeable and energetic, but she seemed to rush through the "script" and her...More

The floating staircase is worth the visit. It is an architectural wonder. The guide was very interesting sharing information about what the house looked like when Nathaniel Russell lived there. I didn't realize how much people enjoyed showing off their wealth.

I'm in love with this house. It's so beautiful that words cannot describe. Our guide was super and gave us a lot of information about the place, the furniture and the life in Old Charleston.
