The current collection has room to grow. It does offer interesting aspects of Charleston's furniture heritage and early settlers. It also has a small collection of reasonable American southern art, and a smattering of classical and contemporary works. A collection form the Gugenheim showing, but not worth the extra fee. The museum store needs tob e more robust as does... More

I enjoyed wandering through the museum, especially the modern rooms and the ones with local paintings and crafts. Definitely worth a visit.

I didn't have time to do the whole museum, but what I saw was terrific. I also went to a concert one evening and found it to be really thoughtful as to content and a great experience overall. Everyone who worked at the Gibbes was kind and helpful. Would love to go back.

This is a wonderful, small art museum with a very good exhibition of part of Guggenheim's art collection. Some of the artists are rather obscure (i.e. in reputation, not content) but there is a lovely Modiglani, a very famous Kandinsky, a nice cubist Picasso, and a charming Chagall. I do wish that a wider selection of artists had been represented,... More

Solomon Guggenheim lived in Charleston in the 1930's and the Gibbes was the first museum to showcase his 'non objective', i.e. modern art in 1936. This show re-creates that show with a $50,000,000 Kandinsky, a $75,000,000 Modigliani, and a $90,000,000 Chagall (my estimates). It would be a real shame if you visit Charleston not to see this show.

Lovely, small museum. Took us about 2 hours to go through. Permanent collection was interesting and the was a special Guggenheim exhibit which was fascinating. There were descriptions at all artwork which made viewing the art more rewarding. Two docents spoke with us about the different exhibits and were enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

The architecture of the museum was the most interesting thing there. Went for the few impressionist paintings, but walked around the rest of the museum too. Okay way to pass about 90 minutes, but definitely not a must see.

The Gibbes Museum just completed an 18 month renovation to restore the building to its original grandeur, and the Beaux-Arts architecture is stunning. However, looking at the images you posted with your review, I am confused about whether you were at the Gibbes Museum or another institution? The beaded bug textile and two portraits are not part of our collection... More

Went here with out of town visitors. Very disappointing, almost amateur showings. Mostly blank walls, very little to see. Won't ever go back.

The newly renovated Gibbes Museum is a joy. The collection may be small but it's diverse and gorgeously displayed. We thoroughly enjoyed the gallery with a variety of paintings inspired by Charleston. The gift shop has some great items and a new cafe is opening soon. A worthy stop.

Revisited the museum with a guided tour of the various areas and Artists displays. Tour is slow and broken into parts by multiple guides with the knowledge of Artists participating in their separate displays. The guides provide knowledge of the art with what is meant and how it is interpreted.
