We stumbled across Mitchelville Freedom Park while exploring after our Fish Haul Park trip. A nice parking area with restrooms is available. There is a nice mat for easy access to the beach on the sound. There is usually muck or mud to get by...More

We came during low tide and were thrilled to see AMAZING shells, blue crabs, and hermit craps in the damp sand. The water, while a bit far out, was clean and warm. The beach was beautiful white sands with tons of shells. We LOVE this...More

Took my two little boys 4 and 7. They had a blast exploring the replicas and checking out the dock with tons and tons of little crabs to watch! The main trail is a beautiful walk under the natural canopy all the way to the...More

This was our first visit to historic Mitchelville Freedom Park since recent restorations. The festival was wonderful--good Gullah food, artisans, music. The band, Ranky Tanky, was EXCELLENT, performing a bit of the old Gullah beat updated to today resulting in a sound that blends jazz,...More

We read that this was one of the only places on the island where there is good shelling. It didn't disappoint. There were lots of cool things on the beach. No sand dollars.

The day we visited, an archaeology team was excavating and happily told us about the site and what they were looking for (the old Praise Building from Gullah freeman times). Some interesting partial buildings and a plaque quoting Toni Morrison that "no 300 foot tower...More

Best time to go is early in the day. The later you go the farther out the tide is and you have to walk a LONG way to get to the waterline. There is no lifeguards out here but it's very private and secluded. Mostly...More

This is an off the beaten path historic gem. Lots of SC history and few crowds. The trek out to Fish Haul Beach is lengthy but well worth it! Great boardwalk out to viewing station overlooking salt marsh along the way. Trails were covered with...More
