Beautiful refuge with authentic rice gates still visible.

The plantation home is very interesting, and the grounds are beautiful. You can see the remains of authentic rice gates in one of the ponds on the property close to the house.

Went over the weekend after a severe storm. There was some freshly downed large limbs and a tree. However the trail was mostly well kept, low lying areas were bridged and well maintained. I think there is alot of potential for this location. One group was leaving as we pulled in, and another was arriving as we left it looks... More

We went there with our three children (10, 10 and 13) and additional family from France. It was a Saturday so the facilities were closed but we wholeheartedly enjoyed the scenery with the live oaks, the plantation and the old rice fields. We saw some birds (one stork in particular) but most amazingly a lot of alligators, babies and one... More

The Grove House, at the center of the Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge, is a remarkable piece of South Carolina's plantation history. It is such a beautiful, and well restored place, though it needs more (as is the case with all our national parks and forests). There are miles of old roads for walking and a picturesque... More

Wow! If you want a break from all the shopping and tourism in Charleston, drive the half-hour out to the ACE Basin. Kids and adults who appreciate the outdoors, nature and the stunning beauty of the Lowcountry will love it.

Gorgeous place to visit via kayak. Would love to explore hiking trails. Lots of birds here, and if you are quiet you can hear the wind in the grass.

If you enjoy being in the outdoors and spending quiet time in the woods, then this is the place for you. Tons of wildlife if you're quiet and plenty of bird watching if you're into that. Its a peaceful and serene atmosphere for a romantic walk, a time to think or just a time to get away from the rat... More
