We invite you to visit the historic homes of famous author, Laura Ingalls Wilder. Have a fun filled day visiting the Surveyors’ House from By the Shores of Silver Lake. Attend class in the First School of De Smet, the original school that Laura and Carrie attended and visit the home that “Pa” built in 1887. Visit the Discovery Center for Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Homes pioneer activities! Try to sew on a treadle sewing machine, dress like a pioneer, and learn to read Braille. Each summer a new exhibit is on display of original belongings of Laura and her family. A must for all Laura fans.

The end of a Little House on the Prairie day with the grand kids. Did not go on the tour because we spent so much time at Laura's Living Prairie. A fitting end to our day.

My wife and I visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial and went on the Historic Homes Tour that highlights many of the Ingall's family happenings. Our tour guide was well versed in the culture of that era and encouraged questions. We enjoyed seeing the Surveyors...More

The memorial was just part of the fantastic experience of having a Little House on the Prairie day. I would recommend this to anyone.

Admittedly, I never read the books, but the visit does greatly tempt me to do so. We did not go on the tour because it was already fully booked with school kids. So really, if you want the tour, arrange ahead of time. But even...More

As a book-lover, I've wanted to visit this place for most of my life. We had a wonderful tour, with a smart and spunky tour guide who reminded me of an elderly Laura herself. The final Ingalls house and the replica of the school where...More

Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The tour itself was a reasonable length for a decent price and was very interesting and engaging. The gift shop had a good selection of merchandise at reasonable (but still gift shop) prices.

Although we visited this on the weekend and couldn't take the tour of the inside of the buildings, I wouldn't have missed it. We walked around the small area where the Ingalls et al buildings are and read all the information that was posted on...More

De Smet, SD is a great little town. We didn't do the walking tour b/c it was chilly out, but we did see a few of the sites. I liked the gift shop, I was able to get a Christmas Ornament and some postcards. This...More

This was unexpected. We were not sure what we were getting into when we got there. Extremely well informed staff and guides. Lots of information and really brings even the TV Series to life.

Can you check out the buildings (surveyor's house, schoolroom, Pa's house) without going on the tour? How about exploring in the Discover Center?

The Discovery Center is free, but if you want to go inside the actual Ingalls' related buildings, you do have to do the tour.
