Description:

The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in...

The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. It is a 1,000 year-old village located on the shores of lovely Lake Mitchell. Each summer students from the University of Exeter, England and Augustana University, Sioux Falls continue the excavation of the site. Tours are given every day during the summer months by knowledgeable guides. Plenty of activities for all ages. Visit the museum, the dig site (located in the Archeodome) and Shoppe Antiquary (a gift shop featuring Native American jewelry, pottery, art and more). Our biggest event of the year is Archeology Awareness Days, held on July 2nd and 3rd, 2016. Open Monday thru Saturday 8:00am - 7:00 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend; open Sundays 10:00am to 6:00pm.

Open the rest of the year 9:00am - 6:00pm.

Awesome Museum and Dig Site

The movie and museum were great. Informative but not tiring. The palindrome and DIG site was super cool. The adults and the teens enjoyed this stop. Price was reasonable.

We really enjoyed this museum! The tour was not too short but not interminably long. Our guide was very knowledgeable and humorous. the life size hut, the archaeological dig and artifacts were well presented and interesting. Good for adults and kids alike!

What an interesting place. First, we watched an informative movie. Then, our guide showed us around the museum. Lots to see!! Then, we went out to the dig site which is covered by a dome building. The kids also enjoyed digging for fossils and were rewarded with an arrowhead to keep!! We all enjoyed this site very much. Also, they... More

We are so happy that you and your children had a good time! Education is so important to us and we welcome the opportunity to give all teachers and home-schoolers our teacher's packet. Bring your children back in the summer during our annual dig (mid-June to mid-July) and you can see what our archaeologists do and find! thank you so... More

My college classmate and housemate is from Mitchell, SD and his mother and father were major contributors to this museum and archeological site. When we entered we met the director, who knew my classmate well and we solidified the notion of six degrees of separation. After a nice discussion with her, we quickly walked out to the dig site. It... More

Great time. The site was covered and very interesting. There was a docent in the building that talked to us about what was being uncovered.

Amazing, mostly unknown history awaits the traveller who visits this place. Not only is there an impressive museum with life-sized replicas of daily life 900 years ago, there's an active archaeology site, where you can watch technicians work on this incredibly rich site. Take a break from the tourist traps, and visit a place that will leave you filled with... More

Enjoyable just a little long for kids. The storytellers told about the Dakota Indian, included the audience in a dance and singing.

This is an open archeological dig where you can learn about the life of Native Americans in the area. Not just an interesting museum-type spot to learn, but a beautiful site.
