Not your typical museum structure, this one is built into the side of hill, and much of it is underground. A contemporary version of a traditional Native American dwelling, this beautiful building features Native American (mostly the Sioux tribes) and pioneer exhibits, with many rare artifacts tracing the history of South Dakota.

My husband and I arrived in Pierre too early to eat at the steak house we had previously chosen. We were looking for a local visitor information center and found the Cultural Heritage Center instead. Although we did not have time to enjoy the museum, the gentleman at the front desk was extremely helpful in helping us decide on an... More

This was a 3+ hour visit for us which is more than we would normally devote. Really well done. The historians were serving cookies as it was free day for every one as they were linked to the Smithsonian which I guess also hosted an open house in DC. Local artist were displaying as well as a Lakota gentleman who... More

As an Affiliate it is always our honor to work in conjunction with the nation's museum. Thank you very much for sharing this special day with us, and to others, please... More

This is a wonderful museum with a great display of Native American life and artistry. A tipi to visit and then stop in a settler's sod house, see an original stage coach move on to gold panning and mining. A few interactive activities for kids. I think the displays will keep them engaged even though many are behind glass.

The center impressed at first sight, as it's literally buried in a hillside. But the exhibits indoors were even better. The center has a good collection of Indian and other artifacts from South Dakota's history, which are arranged chronologically. I was very impressed with how well they were displayed and explained, whether through signs or short videos. The center also... More

This museum us tucked away on a hillside less then a mile from the capital. I enjoyed the exhibits with a real Native American tent and log cabin from the pioneer days. Then upstairs is a great room about the ice age and how it formed the states unique landscape we see today. It is a must stop if your... More

The center tracks the development of the state from Native Americans moving into the region up to recent times in well curated exhibits and interactive displays. The visitor guide clearly shows where hands on, audio, and video exhibits are located. They are about to rotate the Baseball gallery to a different topic, but the other exhibits will remain the same,... More

Wonderful museum that talks about South Dakota History. Great displays. If you have limited time, skip the Capitol tour and visit this one instead.
