This was not that long ago just an open field on the side of Highway 58. The people of Kingston had a vision to reconstruct the historic fort. Over the years, the vision became a reality. The pride did not stop here, the fort is manned totally by volunteers, who make your visit a memorial one.

The museum is really nice with a lot of information. The fort itself is still under construction and some things are breaking down before the new ones are built already. But there is a lot of information and using your imagination a little you can still picture what it should have looked like back then. It's ran on donations so I guess it's taking a long time to do the work. Shame that they don't have more funding. This would be a great place if they did.

Love walking here. Great for leashed pets, the views are great, the paths are paved too. Very clean, maintained restrooms as well.

I live near Fort Southwest Point and have followed its growth over the years. This isn't a large facility. The visitor center tells the story of its importance around 1800 and outlines the efforts to recreate the Fort based on archaeologic investigations. The people involved in rebuilding the Fort are passionate about the project and are slowly adding new buildings. There are periodic activities were people in costume recreate living history demonstrations. Go to http://www.southwestpoint.com/ for more information about events and the Fort. It is well worth the effort to spend an hour or two to see and experience a piece of history.

The fort is an interesting place to visit at anytime. It has a great Visitors Center, and the Fort itself is great to walk through. I also try to visit when the blacksmith shop is open and working. It is great to watch the activities. One of my favorite time is when they have their night time open house (annually at Christmas), possibly other times. The highlight is when they fire the cannon in the dark. Impressive sight. If you go to the Christmas night event be sure to dress warm. Somehow it always seems to be the coldest night of the season.
