The castle is managed by Historice Scotland. The place is tidy and well maintained, the staff are chatty and freindly. The castle is mainly a ruin however there is a restored main room which gives a good feel of what the castle would have been like in its heyday. There is a tea room and whitst the menu is limited... We were completely alone at this castle so it was nice to have a stroll in the gardens. The castle itself isn't that impressive but the area is really nice.

The Castle had an Easter Event on for the kids where they had to find certain clues. All kids got a wee badge to say they had completed this activity. Pity it was not a real chocolate egg but no doubt HSE safety rules prevent this. I enjoyed the Castle and it,s interesting History.

Young lady at the reception extremely helpful - very interesting castle just wish I hadn't needed to run for the train as I would have liked to have spent more time exploring - well worth the visit

This was a nice place to visit by all means! I had a lovely tour with a friend and got a lot of history lessons. It you/I expect a castle to walk around in, then you'll be somewhat disappointed. Only the "new" bit is maintained that well. The area and the history of the castle make up for the lack... More

This is not one of the bigger well known Castles in Scotland but I would not Mark it off the list. It's a self guided castle but you can buy a guide book for a couple of pounds and just take your time going through this marvelous old castle. The garden is beautifully maintained. Parts of the castle are ruins... More

Great castle, a bit of history for everyone, nice gardens around for walks. They also run kids activities during the season so a bit of education for children.

On a sunny day a perfect place to wander the gardens and take in the majesty and history of this important Scots castle. Easy reach by train from Edinburgh. Station adjacent.
