Discover 1,000 years of drama, experience a glimpse of medieval life and enjoy stunning views over Loch Ness from the ruins of the greatest castle in the Highlands. Climb the Grant Tower that watches over the iconic loch, peer into a miserable prison cell, said to have held the legendary Gaelic bard Domhnall Donn, and imagine the splendid banquets staged in the great hall. A more comfortable view of the iconic ruins, against a backdrop of Loch Ness and the hills of the Great Glen, can be enjoyed from the café. Urquhart’s stories are also told through a remarkable collection of artefacts left by its residents, historic replicas, including a full-sized, working trebuchet siege engine, and a short film. The castle has a distinctly Highland heritage and the site has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in our nation’s history. This is where St Columba is said to have worked miracles in the 6th century, where acts of chivalry and defiance provided inspiration during the Wars of Independence and where the MacDonald Lords of the Isles struggled with the Crown for power.

We arrived ten minutes too late to enter the castle, but enjoyed a walk around the area and were able to take some stunning photos of the castle. The mountains on the other side of Loch Ness were topped with snow and looked beautiful. Would...More

A winter's day standing on the tower looking across the Loch with a wind coming from the water. That was our memorable experience from this lovely attraction. We visited a few times in summer, often when busy but if you want a nice winter day...More

This was my second visit to this castle. The first one was a timed visit as I arrived by the Loch Ness boat, and I did not have quite enough time to look around, plus it was more crowded than it was on this visit....More

Our trip to Urquhart castle was brilliant. I would highly recommend the video they provide prior to visiting the castle as it gives a good overview of the history of the castle. Definitely one to visit if you are in the area.

Let me start off by saying that the site is beautiful, conveniently situated and an essential stop on your historical tour of northern Scotland. With that having been said, our tour guide, Graham, made this visit exceptional. He was warm, patient and very knowledgeable. In...More

For a ruined castle it’s well laid out for tourists I found it just a little bit boring but it was worth the stop

So many castles to visit in Scotland but this was by far one of our favorites. Even though it is in ruins, the site is rich with history and has breathtaking views, especially at the top of grant tower. There is a mini museum inside...More

We attempted to visit this castle a few years ago on a summer trip to Loch Ness, impossible due to the queues for the car park. So fast forward to a cold February morning and the place was empty. As English Heritage members we get...More

There are some benches, but I didn't see a designated area for packed lunches outside of a small cafe.
