March visit
Mar 2019 • Couples
This is closed in March
However it looks like this is definitely closed...
Besides the distillery next to the brewery doesn’t look in a better shape
We quickly realized they don’t brew/distil that much

Valhalla Brewery is at Norwick on the island of Unst. That's about as far north as you can get in the Shetlands - two ferries and about 2 hours and a half from Lerwick.
Our son is keen on craft beers so we elected to bring some of Valhalla's offerings home to him.
On arrival, we approached the office (no shop in evidence). We were informed that they had no beer. The brewery had been sold and all stock sent to distributors. I had Emailed before we travelled and had received no response. Likewise a check on the website once we were home has no mention.
In short, a waste of time and no interest on the part of Valhalla brewery.
Happily, that was not our only objective on Yell and Unst, so the trip was not wasted.
Can I recommend, if you are in the area, the Hagdale Industrial Estate, UNST ZE2 9DS? Very unlikely name, and the same from the road, but it secretly boasts a lovely coffee shop/restaurant and decent grocery store. Very much in keeping with a general "you gotta be local to know" ethos up there.

Superb Brewery

A small family run brewery. The owner showed us around - it was just the two of us but he took his time and made the talk very interesting. Fully recommended. The price includes a free bottle of beer.

Tour for true beer lovers!
Aug 2016 • Friends
My Dad and I stopped by for the day, and the owner was kind enough to give us a tour after hours of bottling. The tour was absolutely fantastic. This is clearly a man who loves what he does. All of the beer labels have a story, and the tour walks you through the beer making process to a level of detail I've never experienced before. This was hands down, the best brewery tour I've ever had. And, the beer was quite good, too. You don't get to taste the beer on the tour, but a bottle is included as a take away at the end in the tour price. We enjoyed the tour so much, we walked away with a bottle of each type of beer (he makes several different kinds, and there is something for everyone). If you are in the area, it would be a shame to miss this opportunity.

Made the long journey to Shetlands and scheduling conflicts canceled my tour, great beer and they sent a tee shirt all the way to California for the missed your. Great people and great beer.

Well worth the trip.

Friendly folk, great beers

When you're staying nearby and there's a brewery - indeed the UK's most northerly brewery - well, you've got to stop by! Very glad we did - extremely helpful and friendly people, and some superb beers. We tried I think all of them - some are more quirky (intrigued by the development of the bere beer) - and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Great tour, nice people

This brewery is very small, only a handful of people are working here. This makes much of the special, almost cozy (as far as it can be) feeling of this place. Add a great, informative tour by our very nice guide (who stopped her real work for guiding us around) and you've got one of your best vacation memories.

Thank you for your great review, apologies for only replying months later, we are still learning the rope of trip advisor! We now have a distributor on the UK mainland, so if you need to replenish your stock, please look up the Scottish Beershop.

Did the day trip catching the ferry from Toft to Yell thence to Unst. Was advised the brewery was open for visits but on arrival it was closed shut. Pity as having tried their products in Lerwick I thought it would be worth a visit.

Compensation was on our return to Lerwick we found that there was another brewery operating just on the outskirts of town - Lerwick Brewery. Try their Oatmeal Porter (it was at Tesco's and at the two well stocked specialist beer and wine shops in town). Though not yet opened for visitors (they are working on it) the young lass who was the brewer was more than welcoming and allowed us a quick tour.

We are really sorry that you came all the way to Unst to find us closed. We have had a few problems this summer as we are a small business and Sonny (owner/manager) has had an accident which has left him unable to commit the time to tours that he usually would. We are working on ways to improve our tour availability for next season, as we understand alot of people have been left disappointed this summer. We hope that you were able to enjoy the many other attractions in our island and weren't left too disappointed. We are delighted that you were able to have a look around the Lerwick Brewery with Rhanna, it is a lovely brewery and their visitor centre will be a welcome asset to Shetland tourism. If you are ever planning a trip Unst again, please phone ahead and book a tour, this ensures that staff are available.

Enjoyable tour

We love real ales and as we were staying next door at Saxa Vord this was a must. We met Sonny then a knowledgeable young lad showed us around. It was interesting seeing their small bottling plant which saves them the labour intensive job of labeling and stamping each bottle by hand.
The ales are great and as well as the ones we got included in the price of the tour we bought the other brews too. Sonny tells you how each got its name, the White Wife story is interesting! We drank the brews during our time on Sheltand, the alternative draught Tenants lager in the pubs wasn't a consideration/!
I also spotted in the guest book that Paul Merton had been there the previous day filming. A one to look out for.
