Firstly I must apologies for not responding earlier! So glad you enjoyed your time at our museum. We have spent a lot of time over the last 18 months refreshing areas of the Old Haa. I sincerely hope if you manage to visit in the future you will approve.

Another wonderful experience at this lovely museum

The local history displays are touching informative, and speak volumes about the reverence in which the people of the island and their exploits are held. Thank goodness there is the will to preserve all this local history, and long may it continue thanks to the passion of the community. The welcome at the cafe was exceptional, and the little knitwear/gift shop was full of real treasures of local craft. Can't wait for my next visit.

A Gem

I loved it here. It is full of treasures that you could spend hours looking over. It's especially good if you are interested in genealogy. The cafe had tasty treats and it was nice to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and cake. Super welcome too. The little shop is worth visiting. I bought a pretty heather brooch. The gallery was interesting and the garden is definitely worthy having a dander round.

Nice museum (& cakes)

All over Shetland there are nice little museums, craft shops and cafes. This is one of them with lovely helpful staff although I cant pretend that it's an essential place to visit. Museum free and there was a really good photo exhibition on when we visited.

More than just a museum

The Old Haa is also a cafe, a craft shop, an information centre, a community hub, and has a lovely garden. I could have stayed there all day if I hadn't wanted to explore the rest of Yell.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit us and for exploring the rest of Yell. We are so glad you enjoyed it and had the time for a good look around. We are great for all weathers, inside for a wet day and garden when dry.

A Special Place

Really interesting museum with the little cafe - great cakes! We dropped in during our walk through the Shetland Islands and will always remember this as a highlight. We even bought extra cakes for the rest of the walk.

The museum tells you so much about life on the islands and the ladies in the cafe were happy to talk and answer questions.

Thank you so much!

Interesting small museum

Well laid out and labelled, an impressive museum for this small community, with an excellent choice of home made cakes and real coffee in the cafe, and a quality range of gifts in the craft shop. Don't miss the garden behind which is beautifully maintained.

I am so sorry I missed your review earlier this year. Thank for you so much for your comments. We are glad that you felt the Old Haa well worth a visit. It is good to hear that you felt it was well laid out since we are always striving to improve. The cakes are amazing and the garden group do a great job of keeping our garden tidy.

OUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WHOLE SHETLAND iSLANDS

This magical old Museum and café is a little bit of heaven tucked away in a corner of Yell.
It is in the most delightful setting and once inside it is like stepping back in time.
Lovely shiny old wooden floors, the smell of beeswax and polish. Fascinating and moving exhibits and far more worrying things from my childhood displayed as antiques. I think that puts me definitely in the antique category.
I have attached some photographs taken in Sept 18 just to show how lovely and warm and inviting this little museum is.
But the best thing of all is the tiny café which is run by the friendliest sweetest lady who turned out to be the Auntie of my husbands friend !!
She makes all the cakes and they are superb.
Huge and delicious & luscious simply exquisite. They are also the cheapest cakes in the whole of the Shetland islands and so is the tea and the coffee.
They have lovely crafts for sale and we bought a sheep and a baby sheep.
We visited here twice in a week and we could just roll up and move in and live there forever !! Its charming.

A "must" for anyone visiting Yell - don't miss it
Sep 2018 • Friends
This little gem of a combined information centre, museum, cafe, craft shop and venue for cultural activities is tucked away on the opposite side of the island from the ferry run to Unst, but if you miss it them you've missed something rather special. It's only a ten minute drive from the ferry to the Shetland mainland, so do make time for a visit. You could charge round the exhibitions in ten minutes if you wanted to, but we spent well over an hour in the three rooms crammed with local history items, stories and a temporary exhibition on local wildlife, with some stunning photographs. Downstairs Rita and her band of volunteer helpers offer a warm welcome and the tiny cafe offers hot drinks and truly delicious home-made cakes. There is a craft shop displaying locally-made goods, including knit-wear and many types of art and craft-work. We returned for a second visit because some of the local knitters and spinners were demonstrating their crafts and answering questions. The local school (all twelve pupils!) visit every time the special exhibition is changed which is, if I remember correctly, about every three weeks. Whether you just want a ten-minute break from the journey or to spend a couple of hours pottering around, the Old Haa is perfect.
