About
Overlooking Stornoway harbour, the impressive gothic-revival style castle was built in the mid 1800’s by Sir James Matheson. Since then this beautiful building has also served as a hospital during WW2, a college, a school and now as an iconic wedding venue and luxurious holiday destination with Together Travel. Serving delicious hand-prepared dishes as well as local delicacies, our Storehouse cafe is the perfect place to take a moment after your exploration of the Lews Castle grounds. Enjoy a frothy coffee or two from the comfort of our unique eatery, before tucking into our tasty specials of the day. Pick up the perfect souvenir from your visit to our retail outlet 'The Outfitters', during your time at Lews Castle. From gorgeous gifts to luxury clothing and foodie treats, we've got you covered. Best apartment this trip
Nov 2021 • Couples
11 nights in one of the apartments. Lovely view of Harbour. Manager Allen was so helpful.
The apartments are large newly finished and well stocked. Excellent heating for an old building!!

It is odd coming in at night to an empty castle!

Parking outside the door and 10 to 15 minute walk to restaurants.

Cafe I the castle for snacks is clean and well stocked.

The grounds are massive and u could easily walk 8 km . Just find a good map!

Just remember it's not a hotel with sitting areas to meet people.

We ate most nights in and there are 2 great supermarkets

Visited at same time as museum
Sep 2021
Only limited parts of the castle are open to the public and only if there are no private functions on at the time of your visit. Fortunately for us there were no engagements at the time of our visit. Externally the castle offers an imposing sight from the harbour area of Stornoway.

Chessmen!
Sep 2021
Really enjoyed the videos of people taking about island life and it's not the edge of the earth - but the very centre. Chessmen also impressive.

Nice to look around

Cafe available but did not use. Spent about 15 minutes looking around. Popped in as next to Museum that we visited. Grounds access allowed.

Less Castle & Museum
Sep 2021
Brilliant place to visit at any time- especially good if poor weather. The building has guides a cafe and the museum at the rear is great. Particularly safe covid wise and staff are welcoming and friendly also most informative about exhibits.
The ability to see six of the original/ genuine Lewis Chessmen was a great bonus. Most appreciative that some have been placed here as well as in Edinburgh. They should not only go to London.

Luxury Apartments
Sep 2021
The apartments at Lews Castle are of a high standard and are located close to the town. The apartments are clean, well cared for and an ideal base for touring Lewis and Harris.

Luxury stay in beautiful surroundings
Sep 2021
We absolutely loved our stay in Lews Castle. We stayed in the Shoeburn suite which has 2 en suite bedrooms and a lovely open kitchen and living area with views of Stornoway harbour.

Everything was spotlessly clean and the kitchen was lacking nothing.

Alan the House Manager was really helpful.

The communal areas have been refurbished to a high standard and the small cafe is great for a coffee, light lunch or breakfast.

The bed was extremely comfortable and the en suite shower room was excellent. The only issue was minor - a mirror too high up at the his and her sink for a 5ft 2 inch person to see anything other than the top of my head.

We loved it and will definitely be back for other special occasions in the future.

Fabulous stay!
Sep 2021
Stayed in one of the apartments and arrived very late due to a ferry cancellation. Even though it was late, we were greeted with a warm welcome from Alan who instantly offered to help us with our luggage. The service received during our stay was a top notch and nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation itself was very clean and modern. We had everything that we needed for enjoyable stay. All in all a fabulous stay, Thank you Lews Castle!

Dashed Expectations.Very Disappointed.
Sep 2021
The Castle is such a beautiful building set overlooking the harbour. Lovely gardens to wander and gives a short and pleasant walk along the riverside right into the hub of the town. The museum with some of the famous Lewis Chessmen along with the very informative narratives was really interesting. The cafeteria was very efficient with enthusiastic and helpful staff. On three separate days I tried to purchase items from the gift shop. It was a bit on the sparse side and the name Outfitters is all the more misleading , very few items had prices on but there was no one serving there and the museum and cafeteria staff couldn’t answer my questions so no sales there. Very odd. We were staying for four nights and our room was very large with big comfortable beds. Winter weight duvets so these were on the very warm side given it was only September. Personally I did not feel the rooms were suitable for anymore than a one or two night stay. There was only two small bedside tables to store clothes along with half a dozen coat hangers in a relatively small storage space. Walkers would have virtually nowhere to dry off jacket boots or trousers, so ideal and lovely for someone visiting with basic overnight personal necessities. There was a drawer in the divan but this was broken and jammed shut so full suitcases had to just lay on the floor which didn’t help the ambience. There was nothing to sit on and I fully understand the minimalist uncluttered look that is being sought here but if you needed /wanted to sit down to relax with a coffee or drink before dinner, dry hair, make-up etc, this all had to be done propped up on the bed nowhere near a mirror. Not being a fan of shag pile carpets or rugs where “stuff” gets trapped, I folded up the rug and put it in the corner. It must have been an afterthought to hide a large stain on the carpet. There was tea and coffee making facilities to last one day; no instructions how to use the coffee maker, fine if this is the same espresso machine you are used to. None of the refreshments were replaced during the four days so we resorted to buying our own so I would suggest you take some with you too. There was a fair sized ironing board supplied that actually looked like a surf board it was that big. It was propped up against the side of the cupboard as it was way to big to fit inside it so I felt I was sleeping in my utility room as it was the first thing your eyes met with on waking up. Why could the buyer of such equipment not make sure it could have been size enough to wedge in what is the very neat wardrobe space in keeping with the strived for minimalist look? Our room must have been backed onto the water tanks as every few hours it would give off a loud tumbling watery rumble loud enough to wake us during the night.
The en-suite was beautifully decorated, not much pressure off the shower and the temperature does not get that warm. I believe and fully understand that this is specifically designed for any of us with differing abilities to avoid scalding. There was however nowhere at hand/waist level to hold toiletries such as make up, deoderant, hair products. There was a very low level shelf that could have been ideal but this was directly behind and under the toilet pan that had no toilet seat lid on it so not somewhere I was putting anything. Towels were lovely but not changed at all during our visit so two days fine. Four days they were no longer hygienic so take some of your own with you if you are looking for serviced rooms which these are not. Sadly I had to call the manager for more toilet roll. I felt like Oliver on hearing an incredulous More? coming down the phone line to me. Bit humiliating. From high expectations of our visit to Lews and this 4* room I was very underwhelmed and more than a little disappointed. One or two nights in a beautiful looking room and travel very lightly. Anymore than that is a real struggle to efficiently function and the home away to luxury experience quickly dissipates. I’m sure the apartments would be better if staying more than two days.
