Very disappointing experience in the shop.

Being an avid gin fan visiting the distillery (even just the shop) was a must for us on our visit to Harris. Irrelevant of the details of how we got there the experience we received was luke warm. Not every item is priced so when I had to ask for a price a couple of times it felt painful to get a response. Every gin is different and every distillery has a different story, it would have been nice to have a chat albeit brief about the gin but I received a very transactional visit. I've purchased bread that was more of an experience. It is what it is just disappointed I didn't buy the gin for £2.50 more in another shop on the island and save myself the hassle and waste of time of going to the actual distillery shop.

No tours available - but we did like the gift shop

No tours available - but we did like the gift shop and were given tasters to try any way - never hurts to ask before buying the product.

Well you just have to don't you ???

Well who doesn't come to Harris and not visit this place ? The brewery tour is no different from anywhere else but it's like paying homage to the drink. Obviously you have to try a tipple and buy a botte or two. That's what I was told anyway. Try to avoid timing the visit with a tour group or cruise. Book ahead.

Fabulous distillery tour
Sep 2021 • Couples
We were lucky enough to get onto a tour so would advise booking in advance. The tour starts with the story of the distillery which although it’s relatively new is none the less worth hearing. Their ethos of a social distillery is fabulous to hear and all the staff we met were islanders and equally passionate about the distillery and it’s future to support the islanders. While some parts of the tour have been curtailed due to social distancing , there were opportunities for whisky and gin tasting ( or take it home as we were driving). We also saw the stills and other parts of the process.
We look forward to tasting their whisky when it’s bottled but the gin is also amazing and we love the bottle!!

Friendly and informative.

Visited the Gin Distillery and shop. Unfortunately we were unable to book on a tour as they were full, however the staff were happy to help and very informative. They also had a tasting area if you were unable to do the tour.

Top Gin

Firstly let me say the Gin and the bottle are both excellent . We arrived sadly too late for a tour so just had a quick look round the shop ( and obviously bought gin) Not a huge range of products on sale, but guess most come for the gin anyway . Worth a stop .

Disappointing
Sep 2021 • Couples
Had loved Harris Gin for a while - have some glasses - like the email updates so was excited to visit the shop on first visit to the Outer Hebrides- May as well have bought bottles in one of the local shops - I had to ask about the refills as had missed recent email - but can’t understand the benefits when doing the maths !! Seem to pay more but no nice bottle!!! - Visit to Downpour ( which we had never tried before) was much more welcoming and informative

Monday Lunchtime Dram
Aug 2021 • Couples
Great, informative tour of this very boutique distillery by Sandy. First off, a description of the process in the visitors room then taken into the working area which is actually very small.
They have 4000 barrels of whisky ageing on the island but not yet bottled and we saw the famous gin being made.
A great success story and a really interesting tour accompanied by a few drams. Well worth a visit.

Disappointing
Aug 2021 • Couples
I have visited many distilleries around Scotland and found the Harris distillery rather disappointing. The shop did not offer any interesting merchandise like all the other distilleries, just lots of bottles of gin and associated glasses.
We were expecting to see Harris whisky on sale this year. We have been coming to Harris every year for many years and we’re excited about the distillery.
When will we be able to sample and buy it ?
The cafe was closed which was surprising as other distilleries we visited had cafe facilities.
Disappointing

I'm sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your visit to the distillery. Our shop range is small and considered as we focus on sharing our own, high quality products. As well as our Isle of Harris Gin we offer a range of hand-blown glassware, our aluminum refill bottle, our Distillery Harris Tweed jackets, our ceramic cèilidh bottles and a bespoke range of toiletries, to name a few. Our whisky, the Hearach, is still maturing and we are yet to announce a release date. As we say in Harris, 'it will be ready when it's ready'. We offer samples of our new make spirit as part of our tour. We are sorry that we could not welcome you to our distillery canteen. Given the challenges of the last year we were forced to close our canteen as we could not ensure our guests could remain safely socially distanced given the small space. To preempt disappointment we have advised on our website and social media channels that our canteen remains closed and are happy to recommend alternative eateries upon request. I hope the above answers are helpful but do get in touch if we can provide any more insight. We would love to hear your suggestions on products you would like to see us introduce to our range. Our e-mail address is info@harrisdistillery.com.

This is a very interesting distillery tour. A good price and very informative. The distillery shop sells more than just gin…well worth a look even if you don’t want to do the tour. Everyone is very friendly.
The story of the distillery is fascinating and it has become a great provider of work across the island, the mainland and beyond.
