Description:

Cross the drawbridge over the moat and climb the "bloody stair"...

Cross the drawbridge over the moat and climb the "bloody stair" to the circular ramparts, or descend into a forbidding pit prison. This doughty stronghold, built in the 1200s was twice besieged and captured by the Norse, who battered down the eastern wall with their axes. A short film tells this remarkable story.

A fascinating round castle that has plenty of history in the struggles for dominance between the Norse and the Scots. History video in a side room was interesting and could have been longer. A pleasant place to wander around.

The grounds are pretty and the castle is small, not a lot to see so i was glad the admission was as small as the castle. Worth a visit if your passing by.

There is really not that much to see at this castle as it is rather small in size and stature. Admittance price is fair but should have been a free attraction.

Thank you for your feedback which we always welcome. The admission ticket to Rothesay Castle gives you access to explore this stronghold that was built in 1200s. You can examine the circular curtain wall, climb down into the pit prison, watch our video on our Viking connection and discover its association with the Stewart kings and Stuarts of Bute. The... Let the kids scamper around, but don't leave them in the prison pit. Educational short film helps and visualising 200 viking boats from the battlements brought the history alive.

Lots of it in ruins, but good Great hall, and a prison pit! Lovely if green moat . Great feeling of how the Stuart kings would have lived in this place.

The castle has a very interesting history which you can learn about by watching a 10 minute video on the first floor (off the side of the grand hall). It teaches about the vikings and Norwegian battles with the West of Scotland. Inside there is an open court yard with grass and a ruined cathedral. There is also a dungeon... More
