Fever, war, tragedy, and spirits that refuse to sleep can all be experienced as the memories come to life as one strolls among the monuments mostly covered with mold and fungus. An eerie place no matter the time of day. Statues standing guard, history rising from the grounds, the breath of generals, doctors, politicians moving flower petals above the graves.... More

Beautiful, peaceful old cemetery just chock full of history. Old Memphis movers and shakers and plenty of Confederate old south history lie beneath this hallowed ground. Beautiful old grave markers - take the time to wander around. Just take care and stay alert (lock your car), because this area of town is not the safest. While you're in the area,... More

My husband love it. Me wild rather do something else. The cemetery is nice and lots of history. $10 to get a CD and drive through the cemetery to learn all the history.

Rent the audio tour cd. It points out some of the more interesting graves and monuments. Get out and walk, look at some of the points of interest mentioned on the cd. Really interesting to contemplate the impact of the yellow fever epidemics of the late 1800s. Well worth the visit.

It's amazing how the variety of tombstones has changed over the years. Stop at the visitors Cottage at the entrance for a cd ($10) with stops at historical graves and monuments. We learned much of Memphis' history by taking this driving tour. It is an active cemetery, so there may be services while you are there. Check their site for... More

It's a really beautiful cemetery, worth an hour if you are close by and interested in this kind of thing. Very nice for a stroll or bike ride. It's not particularly large, as cemeteries go, and it is rolling and scenic. The surrounding neighborhood is not particularly attractive. I biked around fairly randomly and was glad to have stumbled upon... More

Stopped in while visiting Memphis, and spent an hour walking around reading life stories and taking pictures.

Large cemetery on the outskirts of the city. Grass cutting taking place when we visited so not as peaceful as expected. There is an office where you can purchase various maps (quite pricey). We didn’t bother so ended up walking around aimlessly as there aren’t proper directions to various areas. Couldn’t really get a feel for it and it wasn’t... More

Amazing monuments and history at this cemetery. Took our time and walked around for 1/2 - 1hr. Many interesting stories of locals.

Signed up for the "Scandals & Scoundrels" tour. The guide was apologetic when I signed in, saying the usually limit the tour to 35, but they neglected to set the limit on the web site, there were 50 of us. The guide (Dale S.) asked at the beginning that we stick as close together as possible due to that fact... More
