This is one of the better conversions of old railway line into linear walkway / cycle path. it is a good 10 miles from Dolgellau to Barmouth but there are numerous points to rest along the way and, of course, you can always turn back.

A level walk and cycle track along a railway line that Beeching closed in the 1960's. Wonderful views as you walk from Dolgellau to Barmouth or vice versa, or part of the route along the river to the sea. The George 111 hotel is at the Dolgellau end as is the historic bridge and an RSPB reserve.

It's a long walk. A really long walk! But a great walk nonetheless. We were staying in a house in the estuary and took this walk numerous times. Can get a bit muddy so some good walking boots are recommended! The walk differs depending on the tides as you can cross over to the bridge more quickly when the water... More

Having completed the 14 mile walk from Penmaenpool to Barmouth & back on a crisp & sunny november, the views were stunning with the mountains either side and trees of different hues, in contrast to the estuary & sea as you near the mouth of the estuary. The walk is quite gentle on the disused railway, but well worth the trip... More

We took our bikes on the car and parked in a beautiful car park by Arthog, right next to the trail. Trail starts in Dolgellau but there are carparks along the trail. There are toilets along it too. Kids loved the easy flat ride and crossing the Barmouth bridge, especially when a train went past. The Toll booth was shut... More

The Mawddach Trail is perfect for cyclists and walkers who want a scenic and relaxing journey down a wide flat gravel path. Dolgellau is a quaint market town good for shopping and wondeful views complete with lot's of cafes. Apart from Penmaenpool, there is not any other refreshment stops so it is advised to take your own picnis and snacks.... More

Cycled along the trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth. The views are stunning and the estuary bird life fascinating. Barmouth is a lovely little place with excellent seafood to eat. Nice easy, flat wide trail. Good if you aren't one of those go getting, mountain bike trail riders.

we booked cycles from a very helpful man in Dolgellau and started the trail from the car park. we booked a 4 hour hire for £15 which gave us plenty of time to cycle to Barmouth Bridge and back with a picnic as well, which we enjoyed sitting by the estuary. On the way back we stopped for a cup... More
