Booked one of the CCC built “Cabins” perched on the canyon rim for one night. Upon arrival we were told due to the drought conditions there could be no open flames. But since it had rained heavily recently they were allowing use of the cabin fireplaces. The cabins can best be described as “rustic.” Ours was the “Lighthouse” cabin. The... More

A great spot if you like rocks, geology, outdoor western scenery and WIDE open spaces. The colors and the sunsets! Even saw a horned toad.

Unlike the Grand Canyon you can drive through Palo Duo Canyon, which means it's view-able for those of us less inclined, or not able to hike. I recommend getting there early, since wildlife are out more before it gets hot. We think that the signage along the road could be better, if looking for a specific spot. We had to... More

We were driving back to Montana from Houston and decided to stop for a few hours to hike here. It was about 45 minutes off of our route but we were so glad we stopped here to stretch our legs! It was hot (84) but if you take plenty of water you're fine. The visitors center is well worth a... More

Palo Duro Canyon is an unexpected and spectacular surprise after the endless, flat vistas of the Texas panhandle. This extraordinary natural phenomenon is invisible until you reach the edge, and then the canyon floor stretches out for miles, exposing magnificent views of the cliffs eroded over the millennia. The colors are particularly vibrant in the early morning or late afternoon,... More

We are huge National Park nerds but unfortunately don't have any close to us. A friend told us about Palo Duro and we fell in love. This place is so cool and the atmosphere is amazing! So neat that you can bring your dogs on all the trails and your mountain bike. We did the lighthouse, and the hike with... More

It was not our first trip in the us parks (we already did the main ones in the west), and palo duro is as beautiful, as giant as his national parks brothers. We stayed 2 nights in a campground, surrounded with this massive red mountains, it was very quiet. We did the jailhouse trail with the kids, perfect.

Took a quick day trip to Palo Duro. If you get any where near you need to stop in. Great views all around. Visitor center has a nice overview. Drive down into the canyon, stop and hike around. Short hikes and long hikes available. Picnic areas and nice campgrounds.
