Camp Hearne Historic Site was the location of a WWII prisoner-of-war internment camp that housed 4800 German Prisoners during WWII. Yes, right here in Central Texas...a far sight from the fighting. Our exhibits explains the why and how of this story. Our tour takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the group dynamics. It includes a 16-17 minute video. Our exhibit includes artifacts from the archeological survey, prisoner artwork and many objects related to Camp Hearne’s U.S. Army – POW – Local experience during WWII. Certainly, we have some visitors that spend the day. It just depends on your level of interest. There are trails in wooded areas that lead back to some relics of prisoner-built theater and fountains they created to pass the time. These would require walking 1-1.5 miles if you visited all three.
