Tours are Tuesday–Saturday 10-4
Sep 2020
My husband and I went to the Starr Family Home State Historic Site on a Monday afternoon. Tours are Tuesday–Saturday 10-4, so we missed the inside tour. We walked around the multiple buildings (the Maplecroft, schoolhouse, the Blake House and Rosemont house). During Covid-19, tours are available but the capacity is limited. It is suggested that you call before your visit. The 1871 Starr Family Home (the Maplecroft) is beautiful. A parking lot is across the street but will not accommodate vehicles pulling trailers. It is certainly worth a look outside and I bet an inside tour would be extra nicel. Adults $4, Seniors/Ages 6-18/College Students $3 and 5 and under Free.

Surprise find!

When we toured the Sam Rayburn home we learned about this house that wasn't too far away so we decided to check it out. So glad we did! It was a lovely old home from another era with an excellent tour guide.

We put this on the list and just expected a restored old home with some nice artifacts. Mike was our docent and took his time to tell us about each room and all the furnishings which are original the the home. It is for sure worth your stop when you are in Marshall.

Don't miss if in Marshall

The preservation and presentation is remarkable. The family was important to Texas history and one gets a sense of how they lived because most of the furniture is original to the house. The curator is exceptionally knowledgeable. Beautiful home and setting.

This little diamond in Marshall is wonderful!

I toured the Starr Family Home during December. It was decorated with decorations for the era. The home has been, and continues to be renovated. But the living quarters are done. The house is magnificent; especially considering the early 1800s. 90% of the furniture in the house actually belonged to the Starr family. And the home has been renovated with modern facsimile of the flooring and rugs. It is truly opulent!

Interesting place to learn some Texas history.
May 2017
I thought it might be closed as there was no cars, but sure enough, the guide was there and I had the benefit of a private tour. Learned a lot about how some land barons got their land after the Texas revolution. May sound greedy but apparently perfectly legal and smart on their part. There is some really neat pieces of furniture to see in the house. The secretary in the Mother in Laws room is a wonderful piece as were hers and the master bedroom beds. Parts of the home are being renovated/restored and the guide let me take a look/see to see some of the original wood work. Looking for a place to take a break, this is worth a stop.

I want to be in the STAAR Family!
Dec 2016 • Friends
I love doing things in the offseason, and this house and estate is the perfect example why. We were the only ones on the tour., which was led by the estate manager. She had so much insight into The Life and Times of the Starr Family, and you could tell that this restoration was her passion. Just hearing about all the renovations was fascinating. Not sure children would be interested, but we loved it.
