Happy with instructors but shortened AM session
Mar 2020
i am not sure how to star esf in avoriaz. overall I think that they did a great job teaching our 8 yr old the “deuzieme etoile". I am really unhappy about is how they shortened the group AM ski classes

We came to avoriaz two/three years ago and i remember the AM/PM classes lasted about 2hrs1/2 to 3hrs and now they have shortened these group classes to two hours. i guess this is a cynical ploy to boost revenue for private classes since parents of kids who go to these classes want a full morning of skiing before picking their kids up so feel like they should top up their child’s esf teaching with a private lesson to take it to 12pm. the PM classes are longer but our 8 yr wanted the AM class as wanted to ski with us after learning more and more. avoriaz is one of my favourite resorts but the way esf structure their AM classes is a deal breaker for me and will force me to look at resorts where esf run longer sessions in AM. Again, I can’t fault the quality of the instructors!!

Booked English-speaking lessons, had to have translation done by other skiers
Feb 2020 • Family
I used ESF for my level one in Morzine in 2019 and they were great. In 2020 I used ESF Avoriaz and expected a similar experience, no such luck. I specifically booked ‘English Speaking’ instructors. Day one was fine, there were two of us to one instructor and his poor English was still appreciated and I could make out what he meant. Day three, eight in the group and me the only English speaker - no effort was made to translate to me at all, another two Frenchmen in the group were kind enough to explain what was being said. Day four: different instructor who spoke NO ENGLISH. I felt like the bit of his jokes, put to the end of the line of skiers and then one of the (previously kind) other participants exclaimed: ‘I feel like I’m working for the United Nations.’

Imagine how intimidating it is stood at the top of an off-piste tree run, relying on someone else’s translation of what an instructor is expecting of you.

I didn’t go back for the final day. I was so disappointed with this experience after such a good one last time.

I won’t use ESF again, and I will be letting friends/family know about my experience.

Our kids love Fanny!
Jan 2020 • Family
The first time we went to Avoriaz with our kids (then aged 4 and 5) we booked lessons with ESF for them and they were randomly allocated Fanny M. as instructor. She is so nice with the kids, they learn a lot and yet have lots of fun! As our kids loved the week with Fanny, we now always as for lessons with her and our kids just love it. When going through the comments left by other users, it probably depends less on ESF as an institution, than on the individuals. All we can recommend is: ask for Fanny M.!

Poor customer service
Jan 2020
My daughter needed filming on a slalom for GCSE so we contacted a few ski schools before departure. The main English - speaking school ones were helpful but it looked like only ESF could do the sort of competition-level training we were looking for. ESF sent a brief but +ve sounding email telling us to drop in when we arrived. When we did I was subjected to quite a lengthy diatribe about my lack of experience which was odd because (a) this was about my daughter (b) I never told the woman what my ability was. As many of the reviews will testify there is little point being in an ESF lesson with French kids as the instructors only talk to them, so having discussed options with my daughter (who had been taught by ESF before and did NOT want to go through that again), we went back to discuss private lessons. Again, a very surly response, I was told that apparently it was my fault i had not mentioned it was for GCSE (perhaps if they asked the right questions instead of trying to insult the customer???) but anyway they said they would get back to us: to be fair, a message was left promptly for us, advising to come back to discuss (3rd day in a row!), but having turned up as requested we were told there was no space and again made to feel as though it was all our fault. All communication with the woman was quite painful, you just get the sense she was trying to score points rather than genuinely help. There are English - speaking ski schools that are more expensive but if i needed one i would go with them.

Avoid if you are not French
Dec 2019
Instructors are ancient with a clear preference for all French-speaking groups. As pretty much all other reviews said, the place is chaos. They blame you if you don't inform them about your child being there but there's no information about who to report to and where to go to except for the general areas allocated to each level. Instructor to pupil ratio is very high 10+:1. The instructor moved one of my sons down a level with another English kid so that she had an all-French group! No feedback given to the child or the parents unless you proactively ask. They put a happy ending on the week by giving out badges but this glosses over the battery farm chicken-like experience of the school. Avoid this school and avoid Avoriaz/ skiing in France if you are not French is my advice.

3rd star
Jan 2020
My 8 year old son who has been taking lessons with ESF since he has been about 3 in different ski areas...; He tried last year for his 3rd star but did not get it. This year he was with a wonderful ski instructor named Bruno. Adorable, patient, positive and always smiling. My son said this was the best instructor ever.. very attentive and always giving positive reviews even when indicating what each child needed to work on. Thank you Bruno!!!! To finish my child did get his 3rd star!!

Good kids' lessons. Chaotic start, but a very happy snowflake
Apr 2019 • Family
This was our first trip to Avoriaz, so we were a bit lost when first starting out and getting our bearings. We'd booked online, but then had a heck of a time navigating from our hotel to the Plateau, and then finding our son's lesson group in the massive crowds, all there for lessons of various levels! Leave yourself extra time, and you should have a better time than we did.

Other than that, our 8-year-old son was quite pleased with his daily lesson, and he got to grips with skiing (it was his first time) very quickly. He came back happy each day, and was chuffed to have earned his Flocon by the end of the week.
