Exhibits rich in local artifacts, photographic images, maps and documents take visitors through the history and cultural heritage of New Braunfels and Comal County. The archives is one of the largest repositories of information chronicling the German immigration movement to Texas. The collection includes more than a million photographic images, newspapers, oral history recordings, government and church records, and genealogical information. Sophie's Shop, the museum store, carries the best in German collectibles, including nutcrackers, smokers, and Inge-Glas ornaments, as well as, books on New Braunfels, Texas, and regional history. The Sophienburg provides an in-depth view of the area's history of being settled by German immigrants. Early development is displayed with emphasis on the settlers' roots, and how they guided and influenced local growth, while cherishing and maintaining their heritage.

This is a wonderful place. The exhibits are authentic - mostly donated from families - of what it was like from the founding days. Beautifully done. Walk through, hands on and narrated exhibits. Side Note: They host a wonderful German Market at the Civic Center...More

The early history of New Braunfels is on display here. Lots of artifacts gives a real sense of what early life for the German settlers was like.

The Sophienburg Museum is kind of a hidden treasure within New Braunfels. While the museum is not large, it contains very interesting information on how the area was developed. The artifacts and information was very informative.
