Ila Loetscher, the "Turtle Lady of South Padre Island", originally formed our organization to save the Kemp's ridley sea turtle in 1977. Now we are a sea turtle hospital with a mission to rehabilitate and release any injured sea turtles, increase awareness concerning their safety and habitat, and assist with conservation efforts for all sea turtle species. We are funded by donations, grants and gift shop proceeds-- For rehabilitated sea turtle and hatchling release text message notifications, please see our website membership page. The expansion opened two days ago and the new parking helps a lot. This is a great 1 hour visit and fills a need on the island. The volunteers and staff are friendly and answer questions in a friendly way.

My mom and I attended the official grand opening yesterday. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and the conservation efforts are to be recognized. Great gift shop, nice boardwalk/pier area, and wonderful turtles to observe.

We stopped to see the sea turtles and due to moving to the new building the next day we were not able to see the educational teaching. Will visit again the next time we visit South Padre.

My children liked this activity, but its essentially an outdoors venue (sort-of covered), and not for cold days. The tanks and displays are journeyman's work, but are educational. This is not a destination - but rather one place to visit on South Padre. The environmentally...More

We were there when it was very cold and they were rescuing the turtles from the bay and the gulf since they were getting hyperthermia from the cold. A great talk given by the staff while we visited..
