Ila Loetscher, the "Turtle Lady of South Padre Island", originally formed our organization to save the Kemp's ridley sea turtle in 1977. Now we are a sea turtle hospital with a mission to rehabilitate and release any injured sea turtles, increase awareness concerning their safety and habitat, and assist with conservation efforts for all sea turtle species. We are funded by donations, grants and gift shop proceeds--

It takes 10 mins to walk through the entire place but oh my what an experience. Listening to the stories of the turtles they've rescued and watching these amazing animals still swimming bravely with missing flippers or other scars is humbling. Please leave a generous donation or purchase something at the gift shop. The work these folks are doing is... More

I hadn't been here in a few years and they are definitely taking care of business.. It is a donations based entertainment but it is worth giving your most!! The place was clean and friendly. The turtles are well cared for and beautiful.

Great place to visit! There are turtles to view, great for kids. Glad we stopped by to take a look! Maybe a 30 minute walk thru. Every hour there is a presentation given if you choose to sit and listen. Donations accepted as you enter or you can make a donation on your way out thru the gift shop.

Great presentation by a knowledgable speaker! So glad they'll have a new facility maybe in a year or so. They really need it.

This was our second visit in three years. My kids AND in laws really enjoyed it. I'll probably go back again next time we come to SPI

This place is a must see. The turtles are being well taken care of. It's very educational but still kinda of sad how the turtles were injured and damaged. We really enjoyed it and shopped at the gift shop. They also have a sandcastle out front.

We visit every year to see the progress of the turtles. This year there was an elementary school field trip, so we didn't stay very long. The docents (what does one call the people that work there?) were very enthusiastic about their work, their turtles, and their environment--I learned a lot by listening to what they were telling the students... We visited this facility and learned a lot about the job being performed by this rescue group. The staff provided information to everyone about their ability to save and return some sea turtles back to the sea and when they cannot be returned they try and find them another home.

We asked for a tour guide to get a personalized visit (we know one of their volunteers) and donated extra for this. Kat was knowledgeable and we learned so much about the sea turtles in the hospital, the permanent residents and all about saving turtles. It was a great experience! Thank you Kat!

Quick, fun, inexpensive activity to do with the kids. Donations only - they recommend $4/adult and $1/kids. Perfect activity for this cloudy rainy day.
