We made the trip here from Brigham City--easy drive, go early as it got busy with tour groups. Is now a vast open space, no active rail any more. Nice movie at the center.

While the drive there is long, it's an amazing drive! The Rangers there are friendly and very helpful. They have videos and a museum to learn more about the site and then you can walk outside and see where the last spike was put for...More

This is about 30 minutes off the highway and well worth the trip. You can also stop to see the ATK rocket display as well on the way. Fee based, good displays and while the engines weren't at the monument at the time we were...More

You need a good map to find this place. My GPS took us around in circles. It's out in the middle of nowhere, perhaps the cell towers had a lapse in coverage. Once found, we drove straight to it the 2nd time. (A local got...More

I got there early and enjoyed a hike on the big fill grade followed by a drive on the old grade west of the site. The golden spike site itself had a nice museum building, but felt dated and staged. The trains weren't running the...More

We all grew up learning about the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory- great to see where it all happened. In addition to displays and an short movie explaining what happened there, there is an engine house where working replicas of the two steam...More

We had stopped here in a long time. The visitor center had excellent displays. The train was not running during our visit which was a bit disappointing, there were some portions of the track out. We were able to see the replica engines in the...More

While there was a long drive out to this sight, we thought it was worth it. We have read the book "Locomotive" by Brian Floca to our kids over and over, so this made the golden spike a must see for our family. We arrived...More

I must confess, during the long drive I had second thoughts. "Do I really want to go all this way?" The historic site is really in the middle of nowhere, far from the freeways and cities. But once we arrived, I was excited. This is...More

If you enjoy learning about the nation's history, and don't mind driving a good half hour from the closest town of any size, this is a great trip. Both the historical site of the "Golden Spike" itself, and the locomotive house, were well worth the...More

Driving out to the location will take up some time, I would recommend mapping it to help plan how long the drive will be. Depending on the time of year they will have the trains running so that could increase the amount of... More

We stayed in our RV at Willard Bay State Park, about a 40-minute drive away. There are other privately owned RV campgrounds closer, though we liked the amenities at the state park better.
