Sooooo glad we did this walk. There were tons of people in the visitor centre, and in cars driving round the valley loop, but from the moment we stepped onto the Wildcat Trail, we saw perhaps 10 other people in 2-3 hours. We parked in...More

Wildcat Trail allows you to get up close to West Mitten Butte in Monument Valley. Overall, the trail is moderate. You may need to catch your breath on the hike back up the hill; but overall it was a very comfortable hike, even for someone...More

Outside of a guided tour, this is really the best way to get up close with the monuments, especially the Mittens. The Valley Drive is really nice, of course, but the hike is a chance to get up close with these unique formations. We also...More

Walk was around Mittens mesa with good views of a number of others. About 6km which took us 2+ easy hours with one or two stops for trail mix and lunch. Take plenty of water even in winter!

When you are in Monument valley, please do this hike! I think it must be so much better then sitting again in your car to do the loop. It is +-6km and takes +-1hour and 30 minutes or a bit more, depending on how many...More

Since we only had a compact car, we decided to walk this trail which is the only allowed self-guided trail near the visitor center. Park the car at the visitor center parking lot and look for the 17-mile loop entrance. Wildcat trail head starts at...More

Not sure that many people take the time to experience this but it's well worth it. Very moderate hike overall and you get to see one of the mittens up close and personal. The last section of the hike back up the hill can get...More

I walked out to the first mitten (the west one?) and then turned around and headed back but you can take the trail entirely around the mitten and then back. I just didn't want to take the time since I had done the loop drive...More

Just what you need. You’ll no doubt have driven miles to get here, so why would you drive round the park when there’s a challenging 4 mile walk. Leaves from the car park, hard work to get down to the valley floor but the nice...More

It depends on temperature. There is no shade on this trail. We did at sunrise which was cooler, no one on trail and beautiful as sun hit the monuments.
