Like childbirth: honestly terrifying, but way cool in the end.

I kid you not, this was part of a "shortcut" my husband found. I was driving a rented small Mazda SUV. We saw the yellow warning sign and laughed in our ignorance. At one point at about a 30° angle on the side of a sheer drop as we rattled, bounced and made it up out of sheer will, my... More

We wanted to save some time instead of going back thru Zion or circling thru St George, saw this on the map, took it. I live in a rural area with lots of dirt roads around, this is a rough road coming up from Rockville, Do not take a rental car on this road unless it is SUV, then go... More

I've read the previous reviews, and can only imagine that the road hasn't been maintained at all since they were written. It would be impossible for a standard car to do this route now. Don't even think about trying it. Here's what you need to know - about one mile after the Rockville turnoff to Smithsonian Butte, you'll encounter a... More

Smithsonian Butte road is reasonable in 2wd vehicles if conditions are dry and you drive carefully. Having driven this route a number of times, my experience is that the crux is the climb up from the Rockville side. Once you are on top, the road is much better. There are nice views back toward Zion Canyon from the top. The... More

Picture is misleading. I don't recall any water along this byway except at Rockville. Still, pretty drive.

We tried this road in a station-wagon. Thank goodness we had front wheel drive. The road was fine from Rockville all the way to the top. But, all of a sudden, we were in mud. I did not dare stop. Later we passed a 4 wheeler stuck past his axles. We were throwing rooster-tails of mud and sliding all over.... More
