I was headed east on I-80, and pulling over at the rest area about 10 miles east of Wendover does not really afford the best view or walk-out experience. You have to be at the rest area on the I-80 west side. I managed to...More

A few friends and I visited Salt Lake City during Memorial Day. I had always wanted to visit the Bonneville Salt Flats because of all the beautiful pictures. Since they were only a 1.5 hour drive from the city, we made a quick stop to...More

We did not come all this way to not go to the salt flats and see where Bert Monroe did his land speed records. So Iconic. Not much there, 2 signs telling you the important stuff, and lots of salt flats.

The photos don't do it justice. Its a really unique place that's like another world.A bit of a trek from Salt Lake but well worth it in my opinion.

It takes 90 minute drive (about 110 miles) from Salt Lake City, and you exit at Exit #4. Make sure you have enough gas, there is gas station between Salt Lake City and Wendover. We visited it at end of May when the Flats was...More

This was an attraction that was directly off I-80. Easy on, easy off. The day was sunny and many families stopped to see what the Bonneville Salt Flats was all about. You can walk on the flats, take pictures of the Salt Flats against the...More

We drove over from Salt Lake City, which wasn't bad due to 80 mph speed limit. You can stop at the rest area on the interstate and walk out on the flats. Or you should take exit 4, and drive on the road north until...More

The huge expanse of salt flats is an amazing sight, with the white receding into the distance of the mountains and sky. Upon close inspection, the crystal forms are everywhere on the ground with sunlight sparkling off the surface. Go for a walk an experience...More

Stopped at freeway overlook and then drove around to race area. Was impressed with both. Walked out on salt flats and loved the sights and views with the mountain back view.

Hi, I plan to visit this place at end of May and I'm wondering if the flat is dry or not. If wet, how much water for this year 2017?

that might be a google question - we went in august it was hot, dry and salty - we were visitors on a tour and stopped for photos nothing else. cars drag that salt every where.
Will be in SLC only a short time, really want to see the flats. When headed west from the SLC airport, do I have to drive all the way to Wendover before I can lawfully turn around, or are there places along the route where I can turn around and head back east to the airport? I've been looking at close-up aerials, and can see what appear to be emergency vehicle u-turn lanes in the median, but just looking for input on whether I can lawfully turn around on those. Thanks in advance, and happy travels!

There is a rest area that you can stop while coming from SLC. We were driving towards SLC when we visited and couldnt turn around to the rest area.
