It's called a pond but it's really big, I'd say it's more like a lake. We went kayaking here on a Sunday afternoon and it was beautiful, clean water, no garbage or litter anywhere on the banks or in the water, and lots of wildlife. We fished from our kayaks and my fiancee caught a couple different fish and the wind was a bit brutal at times but not so bad that it couldn't managed or put paddled. Beautiful surroundings and an amazing view of Bromley Mountain. Nice boat launch with bathroom facilities and a dam for more fishing. Nice place

This has always been one of our favorite places to kayak, but now is over run with visitors from other states that are not masking and have no "kayak etiquette". Don't block the access with your boats when you're not using them!

“The Meadows” is a term sometimes given to areas where a river has been dammed up, creating a relatively shallow pond or wetland.

Gale Meadows Pond is easily accessed off of Vermont Route 30 from the hamlet of Bondville. The pond is sizeable, with several arms. It is surrounded primarily by piney woods. Technically, I think the pond is in the town of Winhall.

If you kayak toward the far end, you will see off to your left a stunning view of Stratton Mountain (the ski area), with its trails fully visible. Near the entrance to that inlet is a peninsula covered in wildflowers and what appear to be the remnants of an apple orchard. There is a minor bird sanctuary there, with several nesting boxes.

If you turn at that point and paddle toward the other branch of the pond, you find yourself in a delightful marshy area, where you can often see frogs, turtles, and water birds. You can just slip over some of the peat that’s forming in places. Also at this end you may get a glimpse of another major ski mountain in the area, Bromley.

There is no development at the boat ramp other than the gravel parking lot, but there are a couple of outhouses if you’re desperate. On a summer day there are often people fishing out of boats, as well as canoes, kayaks, and teenagers on stand-up paddle boards.

There are a few walking trails near the pond if you are bringing people who would rather stay on dry land. It’s also a nice place to picnic on a blanket. Overall, it’s a beautiful, peaceful spot, not far from Manchester, Stratton, and other attractions. The pond is often windy, so bugs aren’t a big problem out on the water, but you may want bug spray and sunblock in any case.

If you don’t have your own kayak, you can rent one either in Rawsonville (2 miles south on Route 30) or in Bondville (very close to the turn onto River Road). The two outfitters that rent boats are Equipe Sport (Rawsonville, near the intersection with Route 100) and Norse House (Bondville).

To get to Gale Meadows Pond from Vermont Route 30, turn onto River Road (a hairpin turn off of 30), and fork left onto a dirt road, Gale Meadows Road. Keep bearing left and you arrive at a small dam, a large parking lot, and a nice boat ramp. Check a map before you go.
