100 years ago, 80 percent of Vermont was open farmland, and only 20 percent was forested. Today, that situation has reversed, which is to say that Vermont has abundant forests. Very few of them, however, are more than a hundred years old, and real "old-growth" stands are rare. You'll find some at Button Bay State Park, Cambridge State Forest, and... More

Our inkeeper in Killington recommended the hiking trails at Gifford Woods State Park. We crossed the road to hike at Kent Pond, but due to a lack of signage, we were unable to find the trailhead. So we returned to the Visitors Center and hiked a moderate trail to the Appalachian Trail, just so we could say we'd hiked there!

We'll maintain large camp sites, ample wooded space between sites, good location. Friendly staff. highway noise is a big problem night and day. Showers below average.

This hidden gem was recommended by a fellow hiker on the AT. The view of the foliage across the lake was breath taking and the colors were vibrant.

While walking on the Appalachian Trail, we walked through the park enjoying a campsite's picnic table for lunch and nearby restrooms. We were impressed at the size of and seclusion possible at many of the campsites. There are also lean-tos at the park. Good scenery and Kent Pond is very pretty.

My wife and I didn't have too much time to explore, however, we found time to drive through campgrounds, hike a trail and visit the lake boat launch. Such a perfect place - campgrounds are awesome!

This is a must stop for hikers! We stopped here while section hiking VT's AT. The office staff was great! We dropped a package there with our second half of food with no problems. Showers were warm and 50¢ for 5 minutes. They have ice cream bars at the front desk and there is a great deli a mile down... More

We stopped here on our way north to get out of the car and walk in the woods. The Rangers were helpful, but severely underestimated the time it would take me to walk the Kent Brook Trail -- 30 minutes versus an hour. The trail was a bit strenuous -- many rocks and roots, and uphill. An easy alternative is... More

My wife and I booked this after a hellish May for some rest and relaxation. It was a great weekend! I think we lucked out because it was the weekend after memorial day and the campground was only about 1/2 full. It was nice and quite. The campground was clean and the weather was awesome on Saturday (rained Sunday). Very... More
