We stumbled across this museum as we were driving home from a Virginia trip. Walking through cars furnished with 1940s decor reminded us of how luxurious railway travel in the US once was. Mid-20th century engines were huge, far bigger than you sense from looking...More

I had been to the old "museum" at the C&OHS headquarters and the additions are nice. It's a bit sad to see the disrepair of some of the cars, but the 614 looks great and the docent in the cab knows his steam locomotive stuff....More

It was very cold the day we were there, but the staff was very helpful and friendly. A nice comfortable gift shop. The museum is very well laid out. It is small, but still plenty to see. On warmer days they have garden trains that...More

We forget, don't we? We forget that there was a time without computers, cars, airplanes, interstates or instant communication. It wasn't that long ago. Back then, the toil of people made the world work. They built railroads, bridges, and trains. Blasted away mountains in the...More

My favorite part of the museum visit was being able to go inside the train cars and locomotives. The Greenbrier dining car was lovely, and made me long for the charm of years-ago railroad travel. Be sure to ask the super-friendly staff to turn on...More

The little museum is very nice and does a good job covering the history of C&O. The O-scale exhibit was very impressive and the staff was very friendly. The outdoor rolling stock exhibits were few but they restored examples were well done. We combined our...More

We visited while staying at Douthat State Park, just like 8 miles drive, and was a fun day exploring Clifton Forge and learning the railroad history and more of the area. I highly recommend this.

It is on the opposite end of town, but I believe it could be walked without too much trouble. Main street is well put together, and the total distance would probably be a mile each way.
